Making good on last week’s report, Microsoft on Monday released OneNote for Mac, a full-featured desktop version of the company’s popular note-taking Windows app, for free on the Mac App Store. In addition to the software’s free release on OS X, Microsoft has now made One Note free for personal use across all supported desktop and mobile platforms. In line with the company’s recent push in marketing its online storage and syncing service, users of One Note for Mac also get a free 7GB of OneDrive storage.

Usage of OneNote for Mac requires a free Microsoft account, which can be created when launching the app if necessary. Once inside the app, cross-platform users will immediately recognize the similiarities with the Windows version.

Perhaps most interestingly, OneNote for Mac includes the true Office “Ribbon” interface for the first time in OS X. Introduced by Microsoft in Office 2010 for Windows, the Ribbon interface is a popular way for users to access common functions inside Office apps. Although Office for Mac 2011, the most recent public version for Mac users, includes some hints of the Ribbon layout, the full interface has been absent from the Mac until now, and likely gives users a strong indication of what they can expect from the impending release of Office for Mac 2014, expected this year.

A key feature of OneNote for Windows is the Clipper plugin, which lets users quickly grab and add information from their desktop and browser to their OneNote notebooks. With the release of OneNote for Mac, Microsoft has also launched new Clipper browser plug-ins for IE, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari. A new Clipper API has also been introduced, which will allow third party developers to directly integrate Clipper functionality into their apps.

Those interested in OneNote for Mac can grab the free 235MB download from the Mac App Store right now. OneNote for Mac requires OS X 10.9 Mavericks.
