Update: Plex for PS3 and PS4 Now Available in the US
Original story published December 17, 2014
Well, that’s good timing. Just after publishing our Plex lovefest late Tuesday, the Plex development team announced today the limited launch of the official Plex client for the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. The app mirrors the look and feel of its Xbox counterpart, and is limited initially to Plex Pass members. Plex for PS3 and PS4 is currently available on the PlayStation Store for users in Europe and most of Asia, with a U.S. launch coming just as soon as Plex can work out the details with Sony.
As with the Plex app for the Xbox One and Xbox 360, this first version offers limited functionality, with the ability to only play video content from a user’s Plex Media Server library. Music and photo support will be added via a future update, as will the ability for non-Plex Pass members to purchase the app.
Note: To clarify the Plex Pass requirement, all users will be able to see and download the app from the PlayStation store, but only those with a Plex account linked to an active Plex Pass will be able to use the app once downloaded. This is the same setup that Plex uses for apps on other platforms that are currently limited to Plex Pass members. The Plex team reports that non-Plex Pass users will be able to use the app in the future, presumably via a separate paid download (the current Plex for PlayStation app is free).
The Plex team says that PlayStation support was the number one requested feature ever, as voted on by members of the Plex forums. Users interested in format support can check out the Plex for PlayStation FAQ.
