Remote Desktop Surface Book Setup Guide

The Remote Desktop Surface Book Protocol –is one of the most popular functions in Windows 10. Perhaps you want to share files between different devices… Or you need to help someone performing some tasks with remote assistance… There are plenty of situations when you are away from a computer and you need to connect to it. Every single time, there is one specific solution – mastering the RDP function.

But while the solution stays the same, the tools are various. TeamViewer, for instance, is software specifically built for this purpose. Chrome Remote Desktop is another widely known app, just like the join.me platform. Different formats, different facilities, all for allowing remote desktop connection.

But how about the pure Windows environment? When you’re running a Windows 10, the built-in RDP utility could be everything you need.

How to turn on Remote Desktop in Windows 10 Pro

The good thing about this OS it that it has a built-in RDP utility. The bad thing is that it isn’t enabled by default, so you will have to manually enable Windows remote desktop before you can use it on your Microsoft Surface Book.

To setup remote desktop connection, go to your Cortana search box and type in “remote settings”:

  1. You will get a list of search results, where you should be looking for the option “Allow remote access to your computer” – it should be on top of the list.
  2. Click on this option and the “System properties” window will pop up, with the “Remote” tab selected.
  3. Again, you will have to check the box “Allow remote connections to this computer”, from the bottom of the window.
  4. Also, you will have to keep checked the box “Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Authentication(recommended)”

Now you have officially enabled the RDP function in your Windows 10 and ready to allow remote desktop connection on Windows.

If activating the function is pretty straightforward, the remote desktop connection is more flexible, as you have two main options to use it.

  • With the traditional desktop app
  • With the Remote Desktop universal app

You will also have to connect to your Windows Home Server, right from your home network. Many ask how to use remote desktop connection, which can be one with the remote app can be downloaded from here and it is probably the best choice, given its versatility and compatibility with Android and iOS mobile platforms. This will allow you to have Window remote access.

In order to connect to a remote computer, you will need a name and a password of a user from that computer. You will also need to know the IP of that computer, so if there are several other devices / PCs connected to your home network, a free utility, such as Advanced IP Scanner, could help you find the right IP. This is all required to know for a Windows remote login.

  1. When you have all the necessary information, just launch the app;
  2. Type the name of the device or PC you are trying to connect to;
  3. Type the device or PC’s IP address;
  4. Click on “Connect”;
  5. In the next window type in the username and the password you use when connecting to the computer or device you are now trying to access remotely;
  6. Select the “Remember my credentials” box;
  7. In the next window check the box “Don’t ask again for connections to this PC” and click on “Connect anyway”;
  8. And you’re in – feel free to use the remote computer you’ve just accessed.

If you’re a more technical person who enjoys taking advantage of more advanced options, you should know that the app has plenty of other features. Access its Settings, go to the “Connection settings” and play with all those configuration options for appearance, devices, and the other adjustment settings.

After reading the guide above, you should know how to setup remote desktop connection on Surface Book. Again, it’s important to remember that you need to first setup remote access before you can use the remote desktop connection on Microsoft Surface Book.
