How To See What Someone Else Likes on Instagram

Posted by Anna Middleton on June 11, 2019

Can you check someone else’s Instagram likes? Can I see what I have liked in the past? Can you be notified when someone posts an update? Can I share their content on my own Instagram? These are some of the many questions we receive here at TechJunkie and one of my roles here is to answer as many of them as I can.

Today it’s Instagram and I’ll be answering these four questions and perhaps a couple more besides.

Even if you have been using Instagram for a while, there are still new things to learn. It’s a simple platform at first glance. It’s only when you begin exploring under the skin that you realize just how much there is to it.

Can you check someone else’s Instagram likes?

You can check to see what someone else likes on Instagram. It’s part of the network effect. They can check what you like and you can check what they like. It’s a popular way to see what the world is looking at instead of our collections of friends.

  1. Open Instagram and log in as normal.
  2. Select the heart icon at the bottom of your profile page to see your likes.
  3. Select the Following tab at the top.

You should see a list of the people you follow and some of the things they liked. You should see ‘Friend X liked 9 posts 12m ago’ or words to that effect. You will also see images of those things so you can have a look and see if they are worth investigating yourself.

You can see liked photos and videos, liked posts, comments and who they follow from that Following window.

Can I see what I have liked in the past?

If you liked something recently and meant to go back to study it further but forgot, there is an entire list of your likes that you can refer to if it isn’t in plain sight. It’s a useful feature that can take you back to a post quickly.

  1. Select your Instagram profile from within the app.
  2. Select the menu icon and select Posts You’ve Liked from the Options window.

You should see a list of posts you have liked in the recent past. You can view them as you need or unlike them if you want to.

Can you be notified when someone posts an update?

If you follow someone who you have a particular affinity with or think the stuff they post is cool, you can set up notifications to alerts you to when they post. It’s a simple way to make the best of Instagram and make sure you’re always up to date with what’s going on.

  1. Open Instagram and select that user’s profile.
  2. Select the three dot menu icon in the top right of the screen.
  3. Select Turn On Post Notifications in the popup.

Now every time that person posts you will see a push notification. You can turn it off at any time by repeating the above process and turn off post notifications. You can also do this for multiple people although all those notifications may become annoying!

Can I share their content on my own Instagram?

This is another network feature of social networks. The ability to post someone else’s post on your own feed. Whether you cannot think of anything to post yourself or you found a post particularly interesting, you can repost it onto your own feed.

  1. Select the post you want to share on Instagram.
  2. Select the paper airplane icon below it.
  3. Select Add Post to Your Story in the popup menu.

The post will now switch to a Story on your feed and you can post it in the same way you would if it were your own Story.

Clear your search history in Instagram

I’m not sure clearing your Instagram search history is as effective as when you do it on Netflix but you can do it to wipe your account clean if you like. Whether you want to hide guilty searches or want to see if content is being filtered to your tastes, clearing your search history is simple.

  1. Open Instagram and select the menu icon.
  2. Select Clear Search History at the bottom of the page.
  3. Select Yes I’m Sure when prompted.

Now your search history is clear and you’re free to indulge in whatever it is you like doing on Instagram.
