Hot or Not has been around forever (2000) and largely flown under the radar, despite the fact that it has around 384 million users worldwide as of the last count.
Like many similar apps, you need to be at least 18 years old to create an account and start meeting other people, whether for the purpose of finding a soulmate or a movie partner.
When you create an account, you share your personal information on your profile for other members of Hot or Not to decide if you’re a match. This decision may even come down to your profile picture!
You’re a match if someone likes you and you like them back. You can then start chatting and maybe get to know each other. But how do you actually send a message on Hot or Not? Here’s a guide.
Privacy on Hot or Not
Before we move on to explain how to send a message to someone you like on Hot or Not, let’s go over some potential privacy concerns for the users of this website.
Just like any other social network, safety is your number one priority on Hot or Not.
You will probably reveal lots of personal information when you start interacting with a stranger, but it’s in your best interest to not give away information such as your:
- Credit card details
If you start feeling uncomfortable, feel free to report or simply block that Hot or Not member.
Here’s how you can report a person.
- Click on their profile to open it.
- There’s a three-dots icon in the top right corner of the page – click on it.
- Find the Block or report option and click.
- Choose the reason for which you’re reporting the person.
How Do I Send a Message on Hot or Not?
Once you’ve found a match and you’d like to know them better, it’s time to send a message and start a private conversation.
If you clicked on Yes – I want to meet this person, you’ll be able to send them a message on one condition. This person needs to click Yes on you too – your ’feelings’ need to be mutual in order to continue the communication.
There’s another trick. Some members can only chat if their account is verified. You can verify your profile if you connect it to a social media profile of yours and set a profile picture that follows the example sent by the Hot or Not team.
Once you receive a notification that a person has liked you back, you can contact them.
- Open your Messages from the menu on the left side of the screen.
- Open the notification message about a person clicking yes on you too.
- Click on the profile of the person.
- Type in your message and click Send.
After you start talking to a person on Hot or Not, they may ask you for a selfie, even though they’ve already seen your pictures. They can do this using a new option available on Hot or Not called Request a Selfie.
Note that this option was originally created for women, introduced to make them feel even safer while using this website. If you start a conversation with a woman and she requests a selfie, make sure you’ve given all the necessary permissions related to your web or phone camera.
The selfie taken via this request will only be visible in the conversation and not on your profile.
How Do I Delete Messages on Hot or Not?
As mentioned, you can always block and report a person to the Hot or Not team.
But if you just want to end the communication with a match, you can delete the message thread. Make sure this is what you really want to do because deleting your messages also deletes the match with the user. You won’t be able to reach out to them again unless they send you a message first.
When you delete a message thread from your inbox, the other person will still be able to see it. If you’re looking for a conversation in your Messages and you can’t seem to find it, the other person may have deleted their account or the account may have become restricted for breaking whatever rules of using the website.
As long as you follow the guidelines of Hot or Not and employ some common sense, there’s no reason for you not to enjoy the experience. Do you already have an account on Hot or Not? What’s your most noteworthy experience on the site, if any? Share your experiences in the comments below!
