The Introduction Card on your LinkedIn profile contains all the information regarding your current professional and personal status. When somebody visits your profile, this Information Card is the first thing they will see.
That’s where you will be able to showcase your abilities, previous work experience, interests, etc. Other people will use that information to get to know you a bit better. But do you know what’s the first thing that catches people’s eyes when they view your Introduction Card for the first time?
It’s your background photo. If you choose a good background photo that matches your personality and your profile, it will definitely make you appear that much better on LinkedIn. The question is how to set or change your background photo.
This article will provide you with an easy-to-follow guide so that you can set your LinkedIn background photo without any problems.
Changing or Setting Your LinkedIn Background Photo
Before we begin this tutorial, it’s important to know that you can’t edit your LinkedIn background photo from your mobile device. Instead, you can only do so by visiting the desktop version of the website. So, power on your computer and follow the tutorial.
How to Add a Background Photo to LinkedIn
Here is how to set your new background photo on LinkedIn:
- Click on the Me icon, which is located at the top of your homepage on LinkedIn, next to the notification icon (bell).
- Select the View Profile option.
- Click on the Edit button on your Introduction Card.
- After that, a pop-up window will appear where you will need to select the Edit option. That’s the pencil icon in the upper-right corner of your screen.
Once you have clicked the Edit button, you will be able to choose the picture that you want to set as your LinkedIn background. Simply browse the files and folders on your computer and select the image that you want to use on your profile.
The recommended size of the picture is 1584x396px, so try to find a picture that suits the measurements. If the image is too large, you can use a photo editing tool to resize or crop it. On the other hand, if the image is too small, you can use the same tool to enlarge it, but keep in mind that it could end up looking blurry and/or heavily pixelated.
To save changes on your LinkedIn profile, click on Apply and then choose Save.
What If My Photo Won’t Upload?
It’s a very common situation that people’s photos don’t upload to their LinkedIn profile. There are several reasons for that.
- Your picture’s size is over the limit
LinkedIn only allows you to upload files that don’t exceed the 8MB size limit. PNG tends to be the “heaviest” format, so if your PNG background image is over 8MB, use a tool like TinyPNG to drastically reduce its size without losing any visual information.
- Your picture’s dimensions are over the limit
When it comes to profile pictures, the pixel size of the photos you can choose goes from 400 (w) x 400 (h) to 7680 (w) x 4320 (h) pixels. As already mentioned, the background photo’s pixel dimensions should be about 1584 (w) x 396 (h) pixels. Thankfully, most photo editing tools will allow you to resize your images to fit these dimensions.
- You have selected an unsupported file type
LinkedIn only accepts PNG, GIF, and JPG files. As such, the reason why you can’t upload a photo might be because you have selected a type that isn’t supported by LinkedIn.
- Your browser’s cache memory is creating difficulties
In case none of the previous three options seem to be the problem, the problem could lie in your browser. Try changing your browser and uploading the image using a different browser. If that works, try deleting your default browser’s cache memory as it might be the reason why uploading isn’t possible.
How to Delete My Background Photo on LinkedIn?
You can delete your background photo in just a few steps. The steps are practically the same as when you want to add a photo:
- Click on the Me icon on your LinkedIn homepage.
- Click on the View Profile option.
- Select the Edit icon in your Introduction Card.
- Select the Edit icon from the Edit Intro pop-up window
From there, you will be able to choose between three options, which include Delete Photo, Change Photo, and Reposition.
As the names suggest, the Reposition option allows you to reposition your image by dragging it, Change Photo allows you to change your cover, and the Delete Photo option allows you to completely remove your cover.
