Microsoft on Monday announced a long-awaited overhaul of the mobile version of Skype for iPhone. Skype for iPhone 5.0, which will launch “in about a week,” is an entirely new app built from the ground up to take advantage of the latest features and technologies in iOS.

Just like the redesigned Skype for Android app, we took the opportunity to rewrite this new version from the ground up and customize it to fit iOS best. The new Skype for iPhone is redesigned to put your conversation at the center of a faster, smoother and far more integrated experience. Our designers AND engineers have obsessed over every pixel.

The company promises faster performance, smoother transitions between app functions, improved group chats, and synced read status between all of your Skype-enabled devices.

The new features will launch for iPhone first, with an iPad-optimized version to follow. Skype produced a video teasing the new features, which we’ve embedded above.
