How to Delete a Reminder in Slack

Slowly but surely, Slack has become an indispensable tool for designers, marketers, programmers, and other professionals. That’s no surprise since it stands out as one of the most stable and reliable productivity apps.

How to Delete a Reminder in Slack

From planning your projects to setting simple reminders, there’s hardly a task Slack can’t handle. This write-up helps you figure out how to delete a reminder, but it also includes other useful tips to manage them.

Deleting a Reminder

This action takes a few seconds to complete, and it all boils down to a simple command.

All you need to do is type /remind list into the message box and hit Send. That lists out all the reminders on your profile, and you need to click or tap the Delete button.

The list contains incomplete, upcoming, and past reminders. Should you decide to mark a reminder as complete, click the corresponding option next to that reminder.

This command works for reminders within any channel you have access to on Slack. But what happens if you get an important reminder you can’t address right away? In that case, you can click the drop-down menu and snooze it. You can set Slack to send you a notification in twenty minutes, one hour, or the next morning at 9 a.m.

Important Notes

For Slack, all commands and actions work the same on mobile and desktop app. Of course, the same goes if you access the platform via the web client.

When you want to delete a reminder for the Slackbot, click on it, and type the /remind list command, and select “View completed reminders.”

When you get the list, scroll to the top and choose “Delete all completed reminders.” There is also a delete option next to each reminder, so you can select which ones to remove.

Setting a Reminder

Since you know to delete a reminder, it’s time to see how to create one. Slack gives you plenty of options to do it, so let’s dive right in.

Shortcut Menu

Hit the lightning icon to access the Shortcuts menu, then select three vertical dots next to a message to create a reminder for it.

There, type /remind in the message box and proceed to create a custom reminder. The same action also allows you to send a reminder to other users or a particular channel.

Before you type a description and click the Create button, make sure to fill the “When” and “Time” fields. Unless you specify the time, Slackbot sends reminders at 9 a.m. on the date of your choosing.

Messages

Setting a reminder for a particular message is super easy. If you’re using the desktop app, hover over a message, click three vertical dots, and go to “Remind me about this.”

Then, it’s only a matter of choosing your preferred time for the reminder. The best thing about setting message reminders is that the action is even simpler within the Slack smartphone app.

Tap and hold onto a message, hit “Remind Me,” and choose the time. And yes, the action is the same on iOS and Android devices.

Trick: Aside from setting reminders for messages, you can also set them for specific files. Required actions are the same as described above.

Slash Commands

As you might have guessed, you can do much with Slack’s slash commands. You already know the simple /remind command, but you can extend its functionality by adding more variables.

The basic template for all remind commands is as follows:

/remind [@someone or #channel] [what] [when]

The template might be confusing, thus further explanations wouldn’t hurt.

You need to include @ before a person’s name to send a reminder to that individual. The “What” part is where you type the reminder description, and “When” allows you to set a specific time and date. That applies to all types of reminders.

When you send a reminder to a channel, you need a hashtag (#) in front of the channel’s name. But if you’re creating one for yourself, type “me,” and you’re good to go.

Important Considerations

It is advisable to follow the Slack’s native date and time format, even if you’re using the app in a language other than English. Otherwise, the system is likely to send the reminder on a wrong date, if at all.

With this in mind, you should always set a reminder according to your time zone. But Slack understands that people work in different time zones. You’ll get a note that you’re sending a reminder to people in two or more time zones. That happens when you set reminders for channels or people who are not in your time zone.

Lastly, it’s possible to create a recurring reminder for yourself, but you can’t do it for other users.
