Why Does Snapchat Says Someone Is Typing but Haven't Opened Message

A lingering “person is typing” notification is bad enough as it is. But what are you supposed to think when you see someone typing for a couple of minutes and they haven’t even read your message yet? Is that person even typing? Did they even get the message? Have Snapchat notifications gone bonkers?

These are some of the questions that Snapchat users ask frequently because the developers fail to answer promptly or fail to deliver glitch fixes. Here are some things you should know about the conflicting notifications involving typing and reading messages.

How Are Snapchat Notifications Triggered

Snapchat notifications are triggered very early. When it comes to typing, it’s enough for someone to tap the text field in a chatbox for the typing notification to get triggered. Even if that person hasn’t yet typed a word or put in a space in the text field, the notification will still go out to the intended message receiver.

Because this happens so suddenly and because of poor optimization, according to some hardcore Snapchat users, there are a lot of problems regarding missing notifications, excess notifications, or lingering notifications that confuse users on a daily basis.

How App Freezes Affect Notification Triggers

Typing notifications can linger for a number of reasons. The Snapchat app doesn’t need to freeze in order for someone to see you typing for hours or vice versa. But here’s something you probably didn’t think about.

Say someone wants to reply to a message you’ve sent. If that person hits the text field and the app freezes that same moment, then you might only receive one, two, or no notifications at all. This is one of the reasons why someone may appear to be writing you a message even though you can see that they haven’t read your message yet.

How to Read Messages Without Notifying the Sender

Here’s a trick that not a lot of people know about. Whenever you receive a message, a notification will appear. The message is, of course, then loaded and saved onto your Snapchat cache. This means that you can read the message in the offline mode too. Because this is a workaround, it may trigger the app to send a typing notification but never actually show that the message is open.

Putting the phone into Airplane Mode after logging into your Snapchat account will allow you to read all received messages. But, the Airplane Mode also cuts away your ability to send or receive data. This means that once you open a message in Airplane Mode, the app can’t trigger the notification alert and the sender won’t know that you’ve opened the message.

Airplane Mode for Apple Devices

  1. Swipe up to bring up the Control Center on devices with iOS 7 or newer.
  2. Swipe down diagonally from the top right corner on iPhone X.
  3. Tap the Airplane icon.

You can find Airplane Mode on all Apple smartphones and smartwatches the same way.

Airplane Mode for Android Devices

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen.
  2. Look for the airplane icon in the Quick Settings.
  3. Tap the Airplane icon to enter airplane mode.

With this trick, you could also trigger the same confusing notification for someone else. After reading the messages, clear your Snapchat cache and reinstall the app. Once you log back in, you can type a reply to the user of your choice.

To them, a notification will be sent immediately as you select the text field. But, since you’ve read the message in offline mode, cleared the cache, and reinstalled the app, Snapchat won’t let the other side know that you’ve read the previous message.

Although probably very few people do this on purpose, knowing about this trick can leave one wondering whether the other user is trying to prank them.

Turn Off Snapchat’s Typing Notification

Many users complain that they’d like to receive notifications only when a Snap is sent. Turning off all notifications won’t really help you because now, you won’t get alerts when someone actually hits the ‘Send’ button. As a built-in feature of the application, it can be difficult to find workarounds.

Some users have stated that turning off “Audible Notifications” will stop the typing alerts on Android Oreo and higher. If you don’t have this as an option whether you have an older Android phone,  there are third-party apps available that can help you control these. AutoNotification is a free app on the Google Play Store with great reviews and the ability to customize your Notification settings.

iPhone users can only minimize how they receive their notifications, but not select which ones appear. Whether the banners are annoying you, or you need to stop hearing the alerts, go to the Settings of your iPhone and tap on Snapchat at the bottom of the page to access your Notification settings. From here you can customize them so that they typing notifications won’t be such a nuisance.

How Many Times Did It Happen to You?

If you’re a die-hard Snapchatter and you diligently work on improving your Snapscore, then chances are you’ve run into this problem at least once or twice. Let us know what you make of the situation and if you’ve used the Airplane Mode trick before to mess with people or to check up on them while also ignoring them.
