How to Tell if Someone Is Typing in Snapchat

Posted by Arch on January 28, 2019

Remember the days when you’d send a message without knowing if it’s been delivered or if the recipient has read it? Depending on your age, the answer might actually be ‘no’. However, most of us know what that felt like.

For some it was very inconvenient. Jealous boyfriends and girlfriends certainly thought that they might benefit from being able to see if their partner was ignoring them.

Facebook is one of the first platforms that allowed this, which marked the beginning of a new era in messaging. Whether you like it or not, we are now living in the “Seen” era where everyone knows exactly when some has seen their messages.

Today, we’re even able to see who’s replying to our messages in real time, with apps such as Snapchat allowing this feature. If you want to use it, let’s go over everything that you need to know about it.

How to Know Whether Someone Is Typing

There are two main ways of knowing if the person that you’ve sent a snap to is typing. Within the app, all you have to do is to enter the chat. If the person is typing, you’ll see their Bitmoji on the bottom left of your chat.

It will look like it’s standing, which is an indicator that the person is typing. Keep in mind that this applies only to the chat. If the person is typing over the picture that they’re trying to send, you won’t be able to see it.

In addition to this, you can also see whether someone is typing even if you don’t have the Snapchat app opened.

Enabling Snapchat Notifications

The only thing you need to do is to allow Snapchat to send you notifications when someone is typing. That way, you will see if they’re typing without having to open the app and enter the chat. This can be done in a few easy steps.

If you’re using an iOS device, here’s what to do:

  1. Open the ‘Settings’ app and go to ‘Notifications’.
  2. Scroll down until you find the Snapchat banner and then tap on it.
  3. Toggle the switches next to ‘Allow Notifications’ and ‘Show in Notification Center’ to on.

This will show you the notifications from Snapchat as long as your screen is unlocked. If you want to see them while it’s locked as well, select the ‘Show on Lock Screen’ option.

If you’re an Android user, the process is a bit different, but still very simple. Just follow these steps:

  1. Open the ‘Settings’ app and then go to ‘Apps’.
  2. Browse through the apps until you see Snapchat, then select it.
  3. Tap on the ‘Notifications’ banner, set to ‘Normal’, and turn on the ‘Allow Peeking’ option.

Now you can receive notifications from Snapchat. All you have to do now is to turn them on within the app. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Open Snapchat, then swipe down from the main screen.
  2. Tap on the setting icon in the upper right corner and go to ‘Notifications’.
  3. Tap on ‘Enable Notifications’.
  4. From the menu, you can choose the people that you want to receive notifications from and change the sound of the incoming notifications.

You now have everything you need to see whether someone is typing. When you’re chatting with someone, you’ll get a notification that will show if they’re typing. From the notification, you can enter the chat and see whether the person has the chat open. If they do, you’ll see their Bitmoji avatar above the text box.

Keep in mind that this feature is not perfect, which means that you might face some issues with it. Many users have complained about seeing the notification even if the person they’re chatting with isn’t actually typing.

This is just a glitch that Snapchat will probably fix in the near future. The best way to actually see whether someone is actually typing is still from within the app. If you see the person’s avatar standing, it means that they’re typing.

The Final Word

So there you go – these are the two main ways of knowing whether some on Snapchat is typing. If you follow the steps you saw here, you should be able to see this without issues. If something goes wrong, check whether you’ve got all the right options turned on and try again.

Many people find this feature very handy, so if you’re among them, go ahead and enable it on your device.

Question- If Jack’s phone gets a Snapchat notification saying “Tom is typing…”, would this notification come up for every Snapchat user who’s typing Jack a message, or like Twitter would that notification only appear if Jack and Tom frequently send/receive messages to and from each other?
