Sony to Reveal PS4 “Release Plans” Tuesday at Gamescom
Gamescom, the annual video games trade show in Germany, kicks off this week and Sony may use the event to announce the official launch date for its PS4 console. According to Sony’s UK Playstation Blog, the company will share “release plans” for the PS4 on August 20 at 18:00 BST (1:00 pm EDT).
While “release plans” doesn’t definitively indicate a launch schedule, gamers worldwide are eager to learn when they’ll be able to get their hands on the next generation console. Both Sony and rival Microsoft have thus far only unveiled a vague “fall” release for their respective consoles, which many speculate to mean November, ahead of the holiday shopping season.
For its part, Microsoft will also hold a keynote on Tuesday, hosted by Corporate VP Phil Spencer. Mr. Spencer revealed last week that the keynote will be “really short” and focus on developers and their games with a “unique exclusive” and discussion of popular European game franchises. There is no indication that the company will announce a specific launch date.
Microsoft has already announced that it is scaling back the number of countries where the Xbox One will launch. Sony meanwhile has announced plans for a worldwide launch, giving it a significant head start in large areas of Europe, Asia, and South America.
Regardless of their launch dates, at least some gamers worldwide will be able to pick up a PS4 or Xbox One by the end of the year for $400 and $500, respectively.
