How To Stop Facebook Games and Apps Posting

Posted by Jamie on March 8, 2018

Facebook games and apps offer a lot of value to the social network but can soon lose their shine when they begin posting random stuff to your wall. When a game or app tries to use you as a marketing tool, it’s time to take action. Fortunately you can stop (some) Facebook games and apps posting to your wall.

The number of apps and games you can use on Facebook is growing all the time and the quality seems to be improving alongside that number. While many free games still want to attract new players by posting to your page or wall, it isn’t as bad as it used to be.

Anecdotally, a couple of years ago there hardly seemed a day went by without seeing a request to play Farmville or other random game. While some games still lock progression behind player gathering, it is nowhere near as bad as it once was. Not all apps will let you stop them posting to your wall as they require it to let you play. There is a Facebook setting that prevents games or apps from posting to your wall but it doesn’t always seem to work. There is a way around that though.

How you do it depends on what you access Facebook on, a browser or mobile app. I’ll show you both. First, it is worth seeing if you can turn off game and app notifications. I’ll use a browser to demonstrate.

  1. Navigate to your Facebook page and log in.
  2. Navigate to the small down arrow and select Settings.
  3. Select Apps and Game and app notifications.
  4. Select Turn Off in the popup box.

This should in theory prevent games and apps from posting to your wall but I have seen this not work on a couple of people’s News Feed so isn’t perfect.

You can also select the app specifically try to edit that.

  1. Select the little gray pencil next to the app to edit the settings.
  2. Select the Remove link next to Post to my Wall if available.
  3. Or uncheck the blue circle next to THIS APP CAN – Post.

Exactly what option you see depends on the app so choose whichever option seems best.

Stop Facebook games and apps posting to your wall from your browser

To stop an app or game posting to your wall you need to tweak your privacy settings. While you cannot stop the app posting, this way you can stop it filling up the feed that others see.

  1. Navigate to your Facebook page and log in.
  2. Navigate to the small down arrow and select Settings.
  3. Select Apps and Game and app notifications.
  4. Select the little gray pencil next to the app to edit the settings.
  5. Change App visibility and post audience to Only Me.

The app visibility options are Public, Friends of friends, Friends, Only Me or Custom. I’m not quite sure how to use Custom so changing it to Only Me means any app or game that posts will be invisible to anyone who visits your page. Only you will see the update. While not perfect, if the previous tweaks don’t work, this is the next best thing.

Stop Facebook games and apps posting to your wall from the mobile app

If you use the Facebook mobile app, we do the same thing but using slightly different steps.

  1. Open the Facebook app on your device and log in.
  2. Select the three line menu icon in the top right.
  3. Select Account Settings and then Apps.
  4. Select Logged in with Facebook.
  5. Select an app and select Visibility of app.
  6. Change the setting to Only Me.

This has the same effect as the browser setting and will only show game and app notifications to you and not your friends.

Talking of friends, you can stop people posting on your wall too. While slightly off topic, it is a useful tweak to know.

Stop friends posting on your wall

To stop friends posting on your wall, you tweak similar settings to apps.

  1. Select the down arrow on your Facebook page and select Settings.
  2. Select Timeline and Tagging from the left menu.
  3. Select Edit to the right of Who can post on your Timeline?
  4. Select Only Me from the menu.

If you only want to stop a single individual from posting onto your wall, you will have to block them. If you want to do that, you can.

  1. Select the down arrow on your Facebook page and select Settings.
  2. Select Blocking from the left menu.
  3. Type a username into the box in the center of Block Users.
  4. Verify the name and select Block.

That person will no longer be able to post to your wall. They won’t be able to tag you or see posts or otherwise interact with you. It also unfriends them so be careful how you use it!
