Will There Be a Season 9 of The Ranch?

Following Ashton Kutcher’s character Colt, Netflix’s sitcom show The Ranch is one of the most popular comedy shows on the streaming platform. As their original production, the show is currently the longest running multi-cam comedy you can watch on Netflix.

Released in the format of two-part seasons, each part consists of 10 episodes, bringing it to a hefty total of 20 episodes per season. Part eight, the second part of season four, was released on January 24th. It tied up all the loose ends the show presented during its run, indicating that the adventures on the Iron River Ranch may’ve come to an end.

What About Part 9?

As with any popular show, the moment fans finished watching the eightieth and final episode, they started wondering if Netflix will release parts nine and ten as the next season. Unfortunately, that’s not going to happen. Even though it was rumored that the cast signed contracts for a five-season production, the show was actually planned to last four seasons from the start.

Considering the show’s happy ending for most characters, fans can have the satisfaction that the show’s plotlines were properly wrapped up. This especially goes for Colt’s and Abby’s relationship, which in the end reached a positive conclusion.

Knowing how the show ends, perhaps it’s time to give it another watch, so you can relive all the funny stuff and the drama Bennett family goes through.

What’s the Show About?

If you’re reading this, and you’re not entirely sure what this show actually is, here’s a brief rundown.

The show is set on the Iron River Ranch, located in a small town of Garrison, Colorado. The story follows Colt Reagan Bennett as he returns to his hometown after a failed fifteen-year professional football career.

With not much hope of resurrecting his sporting career, he decides to help his father Beau (Sam Elliott) and brother Rooster (Danny Masterson) work their family ranch. Not having any ranching skills, Beau and Rooster constantly tease Colt, giving fuel to a ton of jokes the show revolves around.

Colt’s and Rooster’s parents are divorced. Their mother Maggie, played by Debra Winger, lives in a trailer behind a bar she owns and runs. Their father Beau is a bitter Vietnam War veteran who detests all the modern trends and technology. He also gets easily annoyed when his sons clown around.

Colt’s brother Rooster feels bitter as well, since he took it on himself to stay on the ranch and help their father, while Colt was chasing after his career. Regardless, Rooster isn’t the exact epitome of responsibility – he drinks a lot and runs after women.

Finally, there’s Colt’s high school sweetheart, Abby Philips, played by Elisha Cuthbert. She’s a local high school teacher now and in a five-year relationship with her fiancée Kenny. At the start of the show, she and Colt awkwardly bump into each other on several occasions. They start off as friends, with her giving him advice on his relationship with a new girlfriend.

It’s worth mentioning that both the Iron River Ranch and the town of Garrison, Colorado are fictional. The show was entirely shot in a Burbank studio in California, on a sound stage in front of a live audience.

Music Influences

One of the interesting things about The Ranch is how the producers decided to name the episodes. Following the overarching theme of life on a Colorado ranch, episode names were derived from American country music songs.

Most of the episodes in part one of the show got their names from the songs of Kenny Chesney, continuing to part two with George Strait. The same pattern was used for the following parts, including Tim McGraw, Garth Brooks, Dolly Parton, Alabama, and Brad Paisley.

As far as the show’s opening theme is concerned, the song “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys”, is by Lukas Nelson and Shooter Jennings.

The Iron River Ranch Comedy

Despite such a gritty name for a ranch, the show’s anything but that, and in a good way. Watching the Bennett family struggle with harsh ranch life might sound like a story better suited for a serious drama. But thanks to the witty writing and fabulous characters, as well as a great cast, the end result is one of the best sitcoms on Netflix.
