How to Turn Off a Samsung Galaxy S9

The Samsung Galaxy S9+ is one of the most popular Android smartphones on the market. As such, it’s widely used by the tech-savvy and those who aren’t that great with technology, alike. In many respects, the first cellphones were very simple to turn off. You’d hold a button with the well-known power sign and the phone would restart/shut down.

Smartphones are a tiny bit more complicated. This isn’t to say that the action of turning off is complex, but you may be wondering how to do it, regardless. Here’s how to turn your Samsung S9+ off.

Turning the Phone Off

As a Samsung S9+ smartphone user, you’re probably well-versed with the lock key, located on the phone’s right side. This is the key that you’ll use to turn the device off. Press the Power/Lock button but don’t release it. Hold it for a few seconds. A few options should appear on the phone’s screen: Power off, Restart, and Emergency mode. To turn the device off, tap Power off. This will have the phone safely shut down.

To restart the phone, the procedure is the same. You just need to tap Restart and the phone will shut down and turn back on.

Force Shutdown

The S9+ is an advanced Samsung Galaxy model that isn’t likely to malfunction anytime soon. However, if your device happens to freeze or prevents you from turning it off in the above-mentioned way, there’s always an option of performing a force shutdown. Keep in mind, though, that if you’re able to perform the regular or soft shutdown, you should never do the forcible one. There’s a reason why the former is called the safe shutdown.

To force shut down your Samsung Galaxy S9+, press and hold the Power/Lock button. Simultaneously, press and hold the Volume Down button. The device will turn off. As soon as the screen goes black, release the buttons. This will shut down the phone. In order to turn it back on, press and hold the Power/Lock button and the device should turn on without any problems.

Alternatively, there’s an option to force restart your Galaxy S+. The process is very similar to that of forcing the shutdown. Press and hold the Power/Lock button along with the Volume Down button. This time, don’t release the buttons, even when the screen goes black. After a few moments, you’ll feel a vibration. Once you see that the device is booting back on, you can release the buttons.

Recovery Mode

The recovery mode will help you troubleshoot your device if it’s buggy. This option is recommended for advanced smartphone users who know their way around the Android operating system.

To go into the recovery mode, use the force shutdown method. As soon as the screen turns off, press and hold the Bixby button (the one used to summon the Bixby assistant) and the Volume Up button at the same time. As soon as the Samsung Galaxy logo appears, you can release the buttons.

Don’t worry if the phone enters the blue screen mode. The device might be trying to install updates. Wait until the process finishes and your Samsung Galaxy S9+ should automatically enter the recovery mode.

Download Mode

Samsung’s download mode is used to fix software errors on Galaxy S9+ models. It’s also used to install or reinstall flash firmware files on malfunctioning or unresponsive models. You shouldn’t experiment with this mode if you don’t know how it works, as you may further damage your device.

To enter the download mode, perform a force shutdown. As soon as the screen goes black, press and hold the Bixby and Volume Down buttons simultaneously. After a few seconds, your phone should enter the download mode. When this happens, you can release the two buttons.

Exiting the Recovery Mode

If you know how to use the recovery mode, you shouldn’t have any issues. However, if you’ve entered the recovery mode by accident and you want out, here’s how to do it. The recovery mode displays a Command Prompt-like list of functions that you can select using the Volume Up or Volume Down buttons.

To select an option, in this case, exiting the recovery mode, select it and then press the Power/Lock button to confirm. This will automatically restart your device. Don’t press anything until the Android OS boots up. That’s how you exit the recovery mode on the Samsung Galaxy S9+.

Exiting the Download Mode

Exiting the download mode on the S9+ is straightforward and easy. While in the download mode, you’ll see instructions on the lower side of the screen. According to these instructions, you should press the Volume Down and Power buttons for more than seven seconds in order to get out of the download mode. Don’t release the buttons until the screen turns off. Once this happens, feel free to release the buttons and the device should boot back up automatically.

If You Don’t Have Experience with Recovery and Download Modes

Everything you see when a Samsung Galaxy S9+ phone operates normally is the Android OS. You may be well-versed in using this operating system, but the recovery and download modes are completely different.

If you haven’t had any previous experience with these modes, it’s suggested that you have your phone serviced. If your warranty hasn’t expired, contact the vendor that you bought the phone from and check in with them. Alternatively, contact the Samsung support and they’ll tell you what your next actions should be.

Either way, don’t mess around with recovery and download modes, unless you know what you’re doing.

Whether you need to do a soft shutdown/restart, a hard shutdown/restart, or gain access to the recovery/download mode, you’ll find that using the Galaxy S9+ is easy. That said, don’t mess around the recovery and download modes if you don’t know what you’re doing. Even if you’re trying to solve a problem, a lack of experience can leave you with a completely non-functioning device.
