Every day, you get to check out quick snippets of your friends’ and followers’ lives on Instagram with the app’s Story feature. This feature, which was more or less taken from Snapchat, has become one of Instagram’s biggest draws since it launched years ago.
Instagram’s story feature both looks cool and has a lot of practical uses. Since people mostly post their live photos, locations, and events on their Instagram stories, you can easily find out exactly where they are, what they like, when and where they go out, and more. These quick clips feed through quickly, so you don’t have to spend a lot of time scrolling and searching for that one friend who was supposed to be going to that one show tonight. Instead, their stories are posted right at the top of your Instagram screen!
However, there are always going to be people whose Instagram stories you want to avoid. Whether you don’t want to appear in their Story Viewers feed or you just don’t want to see their content, you can mute their story with the Instagram Story Mute feature.
But what if you want to undo this change? How can you reverse the process? What should you do if you mute someone by mistake?
Panic not, friends! This article will show you how to unmute someone’s Instagram story and make it appear in your Story Feed again. So, without further ado, here’s how to unmute an Instagram story.
How Do You Unmute a Story on Instagram?
There are three ways you can mute or unmute someone’s Instagram story.
In case you know exactly whose Instagram story you have muted, all that you need to do is visit their profile and look for the unmute option. This is great if you really and truly clicked the wrong thing (and who hasn’t?).
The unmute option is located exactly below the person’s name and above their Highlights – that is, the stories that they’ve decided to keep on their profile.
You should find a note that says “You have muted [Instagram name]’s story” and simply tap on “Unmute”, which is located next to the note. The option to unmute their story will appear in bold letters, so it’s difficult to miss. The person’s stories will then appear on your Story Feed again. This is your fastest option for unmuting.
The end result will be the same if you tap on Options (the three dots in the upper right corner of the person’s Instagram profile) and then select Mute. After tapping on Mute, a new window will appear asking you if you want to:
- Mute that person’s posts
- Mute/Unmute their story
- Exit options
Select Unmute from the displayed window and, their stories will instantly be unmuted. Simple as that.
The third and final way that you can unmute someone’s story requires you to slide to the end of your Story Feed where the muted stories are located. You will notice that those stories don’t have the usual red circle around them. Instead, they are completely pale.
Tap and hold on one of those Instagram story circles and a new window will appear. It will give you the option to view that person’s profile and unmute their story, so tap on the second option.
This method can be used if you forgot who you have muted or if you can’t find their profile on Instagram.
That’s all there is to it! Whatever your reasons for needing to unmute somebody’s story are, you can use any of these three methods to do it quickly and easily.
Why Do Some Instagram Stories Appear Before Others?
You have probably noticed that certain people’s Instagram stories appear first on your Instagram Story Feed. But do you know the reason behind that?
Instagram, like all other social media platforms, gathers information from you while you are using the app. The gathered information is later used to make your user experience better by:
- Making certain people’s stories appear first
- Making certain posts appear first on your feed
- Posting more relevant ads
- Suggesting that you follow certain people you might know
- Suggesting that you follow certain pages whose content you might find relevant
The app gathers different sets of information for each point mentioned above. When it comes to the stories that appear first on your Story Feed, Instagram uses the following data:
- Who you chat with the most
- Whose posts you have been liking and commenting on the most
- Whose profile you have been visiting the most
- Whose stories you view the most
So, if you just started chatting regularly with someone you have never chatted with before, chances are their stories will appear first on your Story Feed.
How to Pause Someone’s Story
Once you tap on someone’s Instagram story, it lasts only for a couple of seconds. This can get quite irritating if you want to take a better look at a particular shot, or just view it again.
Luckily, you can pause the story before the next one takes its place just by tapping and holding on your screen. This will freeze the timer and the story won’t be replaced. Yes, you’ll need to be fast, especially if your friend has crammed a lot of little shots into one story.
If the story was a video, doing this will freeze the video on the frame that you’ve tapped on.
