How To Update Kodi on your Amazon Fire TV Stick

Posted by Jamie on November 22, 2018

Installing Kodi onto your Amazon Fire TV Stick is a fantastic way of unleashing the potential of this modest TV streaming device. Amazon’s core services are decent and offer a huge amount of content for your viewing pleasure but that multiplies exponentially if you install Kodi. This tutorial is going to show you how to install or update Kodi on your Amazon Fire TV Stick.

It is not illegal to install Kodi on a Fire TV Stick. While Kodi is controversial and gets some bad press it is not illegal. Accessing pirate content or illegal streams through Kodi is illegal and it is this potential that garners that bad press. However, used properly, Kodi is a gateway to a massive amount of legit free content. As it can be installed on an Amazon Fire TV Stick, it’s a no brainer to do just that.

If you already have Kodi installed, you have two options. You can reinstall a newer version or update your existing one. If there is a major version update, I would recommend a full install. If it is an incremental update, the app can handle that if you want it to. Either way takes only a few minutes so it’s entirely up to you.

Install Kodi on your Amazon Fire TV Stick

To successfully install Kodi on your Amazon Fire TV Stick you will need your Amazon Fire TV Stick connected to your TV and home network.

  1. Select Settings from the Fire TV Home screen.
  2. Navigate to Settings and Device.
  3. Select Developer Options and turn Allow apps from unknown sources to On.
  4. Navigate to the Fire TV Home screen.
  5. Use Search to find the Downloader app and install it.
  6. Open the Downloader app and agree to the prompts.
  7. Add ‘https://kodi.tv/download’ to the URL bar and select Go.
  8. Select the ARMV7A (32 BIT) of Kodi and then select Install.
  9. Navigate back to the Fire TV Home screen.
  10. Select Your Apps & Games.
  11. Select Menu on your Amazon remote.
  12. Select Move to Front to add it to the Home screen.
  13. Open Kodi to populate the content categories.

From here you can select any addons or channels you want to add, add your own media, set up radio, TV or whatever you like. As long as you have a good internet connection, Kodi is smooth and works flawlessly. You can stream media from the internet or locally from any shared drives you may have. It is one of the reasons the media center is so popular.

Update Kodi on your Amazon Fire TV Stick

As mentioned, if there is a significant update to Kodi and you have it installed, you will be much better off uninstalling and reinstalling the new version. You may have a little extra configuration to do but the end result is a much more stable media center. If the update is incremental, you can update the app in just a couple of steps.

Updating is just three simple steps similar to the initial install if you already have Downloader installed. If you don’t, add that first. Then:

  1. Open the Downloader app and agree to the prompts.
  2. Add ‘https://kodi.tv/download’ to the URL bar and select Go.
  3. Select the ARMV7A (32 BIT) of Kodi and then select Install.

You will see a warning about overwriting an existing application. Agree the warning to continue. Install the newest version of Kodi and then open it from the home screen of your Fire TV Stick to populate the dashboard once again.

A significant update would be from version 16 Jarvis to version 17 Krypton. There were significant changes to how Kodi operated so overlaying the update may introduce instabilities into the system. In that case, you would be much better off uninstalling Jarvis and installing Krypton fresh.

To uninstall Kodi from a Fire TV Stick, do this:

  1. Open your Amazon Fire TV Stick and select Settings.
  2. Select Applications and Manage Installed Applications.
  3. Select Kodi from the list and select Uninstall from the next screen.
  4. Confirm the uninstall at the next screen.
  5. Allow the process to complete.

You can them perform the installation from scratch as above. This way, all legacy files are removed and all new files and configuration for Krypton or a future version are installed afresh. This should avoid any errors or misconfigurations that can arise from overlaying a newer version.

Those are the most straightforward ways I know of to install or update Kodi on your Amazon Fire TV Stick. Other downloader applications are available, such as adbFire but Downloader is simple and gets the job done. With Kodi 18 Leia currently being alpha tested, it won’t be long before we can put this tutorial to good use!
