How To Upgrade Your Phone and Transfer Apps From iPhone to iPhone

It seems technology is advancing further and quicker than it ever has before. This goes, for all types of technology, but especially cell phones. In fact, every year in September, Apple releases a new version of the iPhone. And as with anything Apple puts out, people flock to their local stores to pick one up.

However, once you buy the new phone and unbox it, you are left with a problem. You have a brand new phone with a ton of features you are excited to use, but all your apps, data, contacts and information is on your old phone that you now want to get rid of. Back in the day, getting a new phone largely meant having to manually and painstakingly add all your information back onto your phone. Thankfully, Apple has made it incredibly easy to switch over all your data and information to a brand new phone.

There are a few different ways you can go about doing this, and they will largely depend on which type of phone you have. However, before we even get into how to switch over from one phone to another, you have to do a few things to make sure that is possible.

One of those things is to make sure that you transfer your SIM card over to your new phone. If you buy the phone from a store, there is a chance they may switch the SIM card for you. But if not, it is quite easy to make the switch for yourself.

Also, it is required for you to have a backup of your phone (either an iCloud backup or an iTunes backup will work). Without a backup of your phone’s data and information, you won’t be able to switch it over to a new phone. Think of this backup as the “soul” of your phone, and it is needed to make a seamless switch from your old phone to your new one. Thankfully, making a backup is quite easy. The simplest way to do it is to simply back up your phone by using iCloud. You can do this from the Settings menu on your phone and it shouldn’t take long at all. The traditional way of using iTunes to back up your phone is also very simple as there is a “Back Up Now” button on your device summary page.

Once you have successfully created a backup, you will be ready to transfer your information to your new phone to complete the switch. As mentioned earlier, there are two main and distinct ways you can do this. One way involves transferring information via iCloud and the other requires using iTunes. If your old device is an iPhone 5 or newer, you will be able to use iCloud to transfer data and switch phones. However, if it is an older model, you will have to use the iTunes method.

Transferring Data/Switching iPhones via iCloud

Step 1: Turn on your new device for the first time. A “Hello” screen should appear. If the phone you are looking to switch to isn’t a new phone or you have already set it up, you need to reset the phone through the Settings menu, which will take it back to its factory defaults.

Step 2: Press the “Home” button when you see the “Hello” screen, and it will then take you to a screen where you can connect to WiFi. Here, you will want to join a WiFi network.

Step 3: Next, you will follow the steps until you reach the “Apps and Data” screen. Here, you will want to tap the “Restore from iCloud Backup” button.

Step 4: Enter your iCloud ID and password.

Step 5: If successful, you will be taken to a list of your backups. Make sure you select the correct backup by looking at the date of the backup, as well as its size.

Step 6: Stay connected to WiFi until the restore process finishes. Once it does, you should have all the same information you did on your old phone, on your shiny new device.

Step 1: The first step is very similar to the iCloud method, as you will see the “Hello” screen as soon as you turn on the device.

Step 2: Press the Home button while on the “Hello” screen and continue until you reach the “Apps and Data” Screen.

Step 3: Tap “Restore from iTunes Backup” and then connect your device to the same computer that you backed up your old phone on.

Step 4: Again, make sure that the backup you selected is the correct one by looking at the date and size.

Step 5: Wait for the restoration process to finish before you decide to unplug the device from the computer.

By using one of these two easy methods, you will be able to easily switch iPhones in a seamless manner. Having to start over from scratch every time you get a new phone would be extremely annoying, so many people are thankful that Apple has made it so easy to transfer data from one phone to another.
