Can I Use Tinder Without Facebook?

Tinder is a dating and socializing application that uses location-based services to find people in your area who could interest you. It’s normally connected to your Facebook account, and also uses your Facebook account and profile information. Some people look at that and see convenience. Others see a huge privacy hassle. What if you want to keep your Tinder account and your Facebook account separate? What if you want to use Tinder but you’d rather not have a Facebook account at all?

You could try using a different app that works like Tinder, but less popular apps won’t be able to introduce you to as many people, so it’s a trade-off. If you want to connect with all the people on Tinder, that’s the app you’ll need to use.

Unfortunately, you just can’t use Tinder without Facebook. It is required. However, just because you have to use Facebook to access Tinder doesn’t mean you need to let Tinder get mixed-up in your Facebook information, potentially showing your Facebook friends and family what you’ve been up to. You have two other options: you can set up a Tinder-only Facebook account, or you can disable Facebook from accessing information from your Tinder account.

Read on, friends. We’ll show you the way.

1. Create a “Burner” Facebook Account

Method 2 uses Facebook’s privacy settings, which it changes pretty often. If you don’t want to stay on top of that, it’s simpler to just create a separate Facebook account for your Tinder adventures.

To do this, go to Facebook and sign up for a new account. (You may have to log out of your regular account in order to see the option to do this.)

You’ll need to link your new account to an email address that’s different from the address you use for your main Facebook account. If you don’t already have a spare email address, you might need to create a burner email account as well.

Keep in mind that Facebook does not really approve of creating accounts under aliases for purposes like this, so you do run into the possibility of eventually having this Facebook account suspended by the powers that be. But, if you’re just too paranoid to sign up under your real account, or just want to poke around Tinder, this might be the best option for you. If you want to follow the rules, and aren’t afraid to make the necessary privacy settings adjustments in Facebook to your real account, then read more for Option 2…

2. Disable Facebook from accessing Tinder

If you don’t want to make a whole new Facebook account and alias profile just to use Tinder, here’s how you can block Facebook from using information from your Tinder account. This means the Tinder app won’t display things to your Facebook profile, so only you will know your Tinder business—not your whole network of friends and family.

You’ll need to log into your Facebook account, limit the privacy options that the Tinder app can access, and adjust who can see your Tinder activity. Go to your Facebook account and log in as usual. Then, follow these instructions:

  1. In the upper right-hand corner of your Facebook homepage, click or tap on the question mark icon to open the “Quick Help” menu. This will open a dropdown menu. Select “Privacy Shortcuts” from the menu.facebook privacy shortcuts
  2. This will open the “Privacy Shortcuts” dropdown menu. Go down to where it says “See More Settings” and select that.                                     facebook privacy shortcuts 2
  3. This will open your “Privacy Settings and Tools” page. In the left-hand panel, go to “Apps” and click or tap on it.            Facebook Apps
  4. Now locate the Tinder app from the list of apps. (If you have a lot of apps, the list might only show some of them. In that case select “Show All” to see the rest of your apps.)  Facebook show all apps
  5. Once you’ve clicked on the Tinder app, a box will pop up with the information that the app has access to and who it’s visible to. Click or tap on the drop-down box on the top right side of the Tinder app and select “Only Me” for “App visibility and post audience”.  Facebook only me

You’re also able to check uncheck which information you provide to the app from your Facebook account. Uncheck it all if you don’t want your Tinder account reading your Facebook information. There is also an option for whether or not the app can post on your Facebook profile on your behalf and send you notifications.

Once you’ve finished choosing your privacy settings, click or tap the “Save” button for your selections to become effective.

Now you can use Tinder without the whole world knowing; it’ll remain private and only known to you. Unfortunately, there is not yet a way to use Tinder without having a Facebook account.

We hope this information has been useful and helpful to those of you out there that want the luxury of being able to use Tinder for dating, socializing, and whatever suits you without your Facebook friends and family knowing what you’d rather keep to yourself.
