How to Watch Netflix in 4K on Mac (Hint: It's Not Through Safari)

If you like to watch Netflix in 4K on your Mac, you should be damn sure you are using 2017 model, and you are running a windows 10 on your Mac!

For a while now, Netflix has made it possible to watch contents in 4K, but Mac users have not been included in the option. However, it is now possible for Mac users to watch Ultra HD Netflix content on their Mac systems even if it’s not possible on macOS. Below, I’ll explain how you can do this.

Right now, you can only watch Netflix in 4K through Windows on your desktop or laptop. But there is a way to go about it on your Mac. You just need to run Windows on your Mac using Bootcamp, Parallels or any other virtual machine software including VMWare Fusion. The reason I prefer using Bootcamp is that it is available for free as a part of macOS and it also makes it very easy to install Windows on your Mac. However, before you start the process of installing Windows on your Mac for the main purpose of watching Netflix in 4K, there are a few things that you will need.

Netflix in 4K: Things you’ll Need on Mac

To beguine with, you will need to visit Netflix and upgrade your account (if you haven’t done that already) to have access to view 4K content. You will need to pay $13.99 per month, (an increase from $10.99 for an HD account). When you are done upgrading your account, you will be able to watch Netflix on four different scenes at once.

The second thing you will need to get is a copy of Windows 10. You can only use two apps to view Netflix in 4k on your Mac; the two apps are Microsoft’s Edge browser and the official Netflix app for Windows 10, which means you can’t use an earlier version of Windows.

The third thing you will need to get is definitely the most difficult one because it is quite expensive if you don’t have it already. You will need to get yourself a 2017 Mac. The reason being that the 2017 Mac series all use the Intel’s Kaby Lake processors which you will need because Netflix will only work with 10-bit HEVC codec support that supports those clips for you to view in 4K on a PC.

You will also need to get a type of 4K display if your Mac does not have the Retina feature. There are quite some great ones out there.

Do not forget that, depending on the display you select, you will probably have to get an adapter like the Apple’s USB-C to Digital AV Multiport adapter.

Setting up your Mac for Watching Netflix in 4K

If you like to have a complete Windows experience on your Mac, I will suggest that you use Bootcamp.  Bootcamp will partition your Mac’s hard drive and create a drive where you can install your Windows 10 to view Netflix in 4K. You can then choose the Windows 10 option when you start your Mac which is better than going through the macOS partition. This will ensure that your Mac works perfectly any other Windows computer.

Alternatively, you can make use of a virtual machine like the Parallels and install it on your Mac. This will make sure that you run both the Windows 10 and the macOS together. The advantage of this is that you won’t need to boot up your in Mac whenever you want to switch from macOS to Windows and vice versa. Another advantage of this is that it if you are working with two monitors, you can be running Windows in Parallels on one screen with the full mode option and be running macOS on the other monitor.

After selecting your preferred option and you have installed Windows 10 on your Mac, you will then have access to use the Microsoft’s Edge browser, which is one of the preloaded apps on Windows 10. You just need to sign in to Netflix.com. And do not forget that you will need to visit the Microsoft Store to download the Netflix app for your 4K viewing.
