Wechat How to Invite to a Group

WeChat is the go-to social media app in China and many neighboring Asian countries. The app is so vast and complex, some might argue that it could be its own operating system. Although there are many things that you can do with it and use it for, the majority of people use WeChat purely for the communication aspect.

One such aspect, the group chat feature, will be explained in this article. You will learn how to create groups and – more importantly – how to invite people to join them.

WeChat Group Features

There are two very important features you need to know about WeChat groups. First of all, groups are hidden and you can’t see them unless you’re added to them. Secondly, group chats can host up to 500 people.

However, if a group already has 100 members in it, you may not be able to join the group, on your own or via invitation, unless you have the WeChat Pay feature activated. To activate WeChat Pay, you simply have to link a bank account to your WeChat account.

QR Codes

QR codes are unique 2D barcode identifiers for individuals, groups, and businesses that use WeChat. Unlike other similar messaging and online call services, WeChat doesn’t require users to add or link a phone number to their accounts.

QR codes

Group chats also have their own unique QR codes, which are generated as soon as a group chat is formed. If someone has a QR code for a group, scanning the QR code will grant access to that group chat. However, this only works until the first 100 members have joined a chat. After a group has reached that threshold, joining via the QR code is no longer possible.

How to Start a Group

If you’re not a member of any specific group just yet, here’s how you can add some of your contacts to a group and initiate a public conversation with all selected contacts:

  1. Launch WeChat.
  2. Tap the “Plus” icon in the top-right corner.
  3. Select “Group Chat.”
  4. Select the contacts you want to add.
  5. Tap “OK.”

How to Invite People to Groups

After you’ve created a group chat, you can still invite more people other than the contacts you’ve initially selected. One option would be to message someone the QR code for your group. This way, the person can join whenever they’re ready.

Say your group already has 100 members. How can you get more people in? With the QR code no longer being a viable option, you’ll have to manually invite new people.

  1. Bring up the group chat.
  2. Tap the “…” icon.
  3. Tap the “Plus” icon.
  4. Select new contacts from your list.
  5. Tap “OK.”

How to Invite People to Group Calls

WeChat allows group calls for up to nine people. Group calls must be initiated between group members; therefore, you won’t be able to simply invite any contacts to a group call.

Here’s how you do it:

  1. Bring up the group chat window.
  2. Click the “Plus” icon.
  3. Select “Voice Call.”
  4. Select the group members you want to talk to.
  5. Tap “Start” in the top-right corner.

As the person who initiated the group call, you’ll also have an option to enable the video call mode, mute your microphone, or enable the speaker mode for the entire group call. Note that for this to work, you must have WeChat v6.3.5 or later.

How to Remove Someone from a Group

Unless you’re a group owner or leader, you can’t kick someone out of a group. If you’ve started your own group, here’s how you can remove the troublemakers:

  1. Bring up the group chat window.
  2. Tap the “…” icon.
  3. Find the person you want to remove.
  4. Tap and hold on the profile picture.
  5. Tap the red circle once it appears.

Note that this won’t ban that person from the group. They can rejoin with the QR code if your group has fewer than 100 members. You can also reinvite them into the group at a later date should you change your mind and if room is available.

Connecting People and Interests

Whether you want to do some targeted advertising, market research, or simply talk to other people of similar interests, WeChat groups are one of the best ways to do so.

What are some of your most notable experiences with WeChat groups? Have you ever had to deal with troublemakers and, if so, how did you handle it? Let us know in the comments below. Don’t forget to attach a QR code if you want to invite others to your group.
