Right after Christmas of 2016 fruit started appearing in Snaps all around Snapchat.  Apparently, it’s code as to whether you’re single, taken, it’s complicated, and so forth.  It had many Snapchat users in a world of confusion unless they were the ones doing it, then they had the upper hand in this guessing game.

This creative way of stating your relationship status is different than the traditional way of just stating the obvious.  Okay fine, it’s unique I’ll give it that.  But, you may still not be in the loop as to what all the different fruit as relationship statuses represent.

Rumor has it that this fruit craze started to confuse people on Snapchat about their relationship status.  Well, more and more snap chat folks have been catching on.  They are beginning to decipher what each fruit stands for and figuring out the code.

• Blueberry means Your single
• Pineapple means it’s complicated
• Raspberry means you’re not looking to commit to one person
• Apple means you’re engaged
• Cherry means you’re already in a relationship
• Banana means you’re married
• Avocado means you’re the better half in the relationship
• Strawberry means you can’t find the right one
• Lemon means you want to be single
• Raisin means you want to get married to your current partner

Once people began to catch on to the fruit emojis, people began using animals to privately convey their relationship status. Similar to the fruit, Snapchat users have a specific and detailed code with the correlating animal emojis.

This code is as follows:

• Horse Emoji – This person is likely single
• Cheetah – The Cheetah symbolizes that the person is in a relationship
• Whale or Monkey – This means they’re in a complicated relationship and they may or may not divulge why
• Octopus – This means they don’t know, which may be closely related to the complicated relationship status
• Lion – This means they are interested in someone but not committed
• Rabbit – This simply means they haven’t found their perfect partner
• Pig – Relative to the attractiveness (or lack of attractive attributes) to those in their social circle
• Dog – This is indicative of someone who is not looking for a long-term relationship
• Bird – When a person shares a bird on their Snapchat story they’re looking forward to getting married
• Frog – They’re married
• Mouse – More of a comical relationship status; they’re saying that they are the better half in their current relationship

Animal emojis most likely won’t be the last we hear of relationship symbolism in Snapchat stories, but it is another fun and interesting secret code within the social media community.

Snapchat users are evolving the social media application beyond the app developers’ vision. This popular application has several symbols and meanings embedded by the people who are active on it, rather than by the people who created it.

Snapchat Friend Emojis

Of course, users didn’t neglect their closest friends. There is a whole list of friend emojis and their meanings. For example; the Golden heart emoji (often posted by two people simultaneously) means someone is their #1 best friend. These emoji symbols go so far as to announce friendship anniversaries too. The red heart emojis mean the two users have been best friend for two weeks. The Pink heart emoji symbolizes one month.

Snapchat also offers its own symbols in the form of the colorful “send” arrow. The color of this arrow will tell you different things about the message you’ve sent.

Most forms of social media have some form of symbolism or secretive messages created by users, especially those who are young. Most of the time these symbols are harmless and solely for fun.

If you’re a parent who is concerned about your child’s Snapchat use, there are a few things to look out for. Emojis that symbolize pills or plant life can indicate drug use in some cases (not all of course). Assuming you’re concerned about your child’s recreational activities, Snapchat emojis are not the only indicator you should look for but they may give you some insight into your child’s activities.

Pre-2016, emojis were a little more threatening than they are now. The gun emoji used to look like a legitimate image of a pistol, now it’s a less threatening squirt gun. Weapons emojis can be used to make threats.

Emojis that are used for harm is not necessarily something that is difficult to decode. If someone is sending threatening emojis or those with drug-related inuendos it will be obvious based on the context of both the message and the relationship.

Overall, emojis are a fun and light-hearted way to communicate with others. Likely not nefarious in any way, these tiny symbols can represent various relationship statuses, feelings, emotions, and more.
