What is a Snapchat Streak?

Snapchat was the first social platform to introduce Stories. However, Instagram and Facebook soon caught up and introduced their own versions of this super-popular feature. In a bid to take the game further and keep its users onboard and engaged, Snapchat introduced the Snapstreak soon after.

In this article, we’ll investigate what a Snapstreak is, how to start and maintain one, and what the rules of the game are. We’ll also explore whether it affects your Snapchat score.

Snapstreak 101

For the uninitiated, a Snapstreak is a streak of snaps you exchange with a friend on Snapchat. The rules of the game are very simple and easy to follow. You only need to send a snap to your friend you’re streaking with once every 24 hours to keep the game alive. They too have to send you a snap within a 24-hour window not to break the Snapstreak.

This feature was introduced back in2016, with the 2.0 version of the chat. It was an attempt, obviously a successful one, to keep people on the platform and prompt them to engage with each other on a regular basis.

You can have Snapstreaks with as many friends as you want to and Snapchat will keep the score automatically. You only need to send and receive snaps regularly and your Snapstreaks will blossom. What’s more, Snapchat takes Snapstreaks into account when calculating your Snapchat score. So if you’re worried about your score or wish to improve it, start streaking.

How Does It Work?

It is very easy to start a Snapstreak; you just need to send a snap (not a chat message) to a friend. If they respond within 24 hours, you’re on your way to starting a Snapstreak. If you both send each other another snap within 24 hours of your first snaps – congratulations, you’ve started a Snapstreak. A fire emoji will appear next to your names on your friends lists, denoting you’ve got a Snapstreak going on with someone.

To keep the Snapstreak going, you need to snap each other at least once within 24 hours of your last respective snaps. Snapchat will count the days and add numbers next to the fire emojis. For example, if your Snapstreak has been going on for 17 days, the number 17 will stand next to the fire emoji.

When you reach the 100th day of the Snapstreak, Snapchat will reward your commitment to the Snapstreak with a number 100 next to the fire emoji. If you reach 500 days, you will get the mountain emoji that tells everyone your relationship is rock-solid.

It is worth noting that any photo will do as a snap, even a blank one. As long as you send one, your Snapstreak will continue to grow. What’s more, you can send the same photo every time and it will still count. For example, you can make one photo, write “Snapstreak” across it, and send it to all your friends you’re Snapstreaking with.

Snapstreak Rules and Limitations

To make the Snapstreak game more interesting, Snapchat has set some limitations as to what counts and what doesn’t count toward your Snapstreak count. Here’s a short overview of the limitations and constraints:

  1. Chat messages. Snapchat has ruled text messages out in a bid to increase the users’ camera activity on the platform. You can chat with your special friend or friends as much as you want to, but the chat messages you send won’t count towards the Snapstreak.
  2. Memories have been ruled out, as well. Their role is to remind you of the good times you had in the past. Therefore, if you share a memory with your friend, it won’t count.
  3. You can post a Story to Snapchat whenever you want, but it won’t be considered a valuable streak snap even if the friend you’re streaking with sees it.
  4. Group chat. Similar to one-on-one chats, text messages posted in group chats also don’t count towards your Snapstreak with someone. Snaps sent to group chats don’t count, either.
  5. Content you send the friend you’re streaking with through Spectacles doesn’t count toward your streak.

What If You Forget to Snap?

In case you forget to snap your BFF today, Snapchat will remind you that your Snapstreak is about to break. You will see an hourglass emoji next to your friend’s name in your Recent list. The emoji will appear several hours before the 24-hour window closes. If you send a snap-on time, your streak continues.

If you, however, miss the notification and forget to send a snap before the deadline, your Snapstreak breaks. It can be disappointing to see a 300 or 500-day streak go to waste because you forgot to send a snap one day. However, Snapchat allows you to start a new streak with the same person right away.

For Those About to Snap, We Salute You

Remember, starting a Snapstreak is easy, as it just takes two days and two snaps from each participant. Maintaining it is easy as well and Snapchat even reminds the forgetful streakers that their streaks are about to expire. Finally, having a number of long streaks can boost your Snapchat score.
