How To Add Date/Time Stamps to Photos on Android

Posted by Arch on July 11, 2018

Android’s stock camera app offers some useful image editing options. However, there is no option for adding a date/time stamp to the picture you’ve taken.

One thing you can do is to check the metadata of your photograph and then use an image editing software to add the date and time. But this is a hassle and the resulting image can easily get altered by someone else. To avoid that risk, you need an option to embed date/time stamps as soon as you take a snapshot.

But what’s the best way to do that?

Since Android’s camera app doesn’t offer a date/time stamp option, you will need to download a third-party app. There are many free options out there. But which one is the best?

PhotoStamp Camera Free

Our top choice is the PhotoStamp Camera Free app. Here is a step-by-step guide to timestamping pictures using PhotoStamp Camera Free.

Step 1: Install the App

This app requires Android 4.0.3 and up. It only takes up 3.55 MB of space. To install the app, you need to grant access to your phone’s location as well as the camera. The location is necessary because the app gives you the option to stamp your GPS coordinates.

Step 2: Open the App

You can start taking stamped screenshots immediately, using the camera button in the middle of your screen.
But before you do that, you want to look into the app’s built-in features.

On the left, you can see the last photo taken with the app. On the right, the white camera icon lets you switch between your phone’s front and back cameras. To change the settings, use the gear icon in the upper right corner of your screen.

Step 3: Go Into Settings

Here you can change the formatting of your date/time stamps.

First, there is a toggle that you can use to turn auto-stamping on and off.

Then you can select your preferred date format. By default, the format is MMM dd, yyyy, followed by the exact time down to the second.

After you’ve chosen your favorite date format, you can go for different font sizes and colors. You also have 800+ font styles to choose from.

Once you’ve decided on the best font for your timestamp, you can select Adjust Stamp Position. By default, the stamp is in the lower right corner of your screen.

Step 4: Take a Photo with an Automatic Time/Date Stamp

Make sure the Time & Date Stamp toggle under Settings is switched on, and you’re ready to take pictures with the PhotoStamp Camera Free app. Your photographs will get stored in the folder used by your stock camera app.

Here is what your timestamped photo will look like, first with the default stamp settings and then with custom stamp settings.

Step 5: Explore Some Other Features of This App

In addition to date and time stamps, you can use the PhotoStamp Camera Free app to:

  1. Add a Signature to Your Photos
You can enter your name or another caption for adding to all of your photographs. Once again, it’s up to you to decide on the font and caption placement. Your signature is separate from your time/date stamp.
  2. Add a Location
This app can also add your exact GPS coordinates to your photos. If you prefer a more tangible location, it can add your city, area, state, or country. You can change the font and placement for this stamp as well.
  3. Change the Image Quality
You can also alter the aspect ratio or resolution when you take photos with this app.

Why Is This App Our Top Choice?

The PhotoStamp Camera Free app is very easy to use. You can start taking photos as soon as you install it. You’ll have accurate timestamps without giving it a second thought.

But what really makes this app stand out is that you can customize the layout of your timestamp. In contrast, most other free time/date stamp apps make you pay extra if you want to change the font or color of the text. Changing the placement isn’t always possible either.

Are There Any Downsides?

Unfortunately, this free app comes with inconvenient pop-ups. Additionally, it doesn’t offer filters that can improve your photographs. It also lacks a watermark stamping option.

Some Alternatives

If you’re willing to pay for an ad-free experience, you might enjoy using Vignette. This app is fairly affordable and it comes with a number of photo editing options.

Camera360 is another good choice for automatic time/date stamping. It is free to use and comes with many filters that can improve your photographs. However, this app is a little more complicated to use.

Automatic time stamping is important to many Android users. Fortunately, there is a wide selection of free apps for this purpose.

PhotoStamp Camera Free is a great option if adding accurate time/date stamps to your pictures is your only goal. The app is simple to use and lets you modify the font. But if you’re looking for filters that can improve image quality, you might want to go for a general-purpose camera app where time/date stamping is just one of many features.
