Since 2015, Discord users have enjoyed the ability to communicate with other gamers via crystal clear VoIP, video, and text. But trying to come up with a name to use on Discord can be kind of tricky, especially if you play lots of different characters in lots of different games. Or, what if you want to use something other than your game username? If you want to generate cool usernames for Discord, this tutorial will show you how to come up with something that describes you as an individual and set you above the masses online.
Considering how much your username says about your personality, it seems few people give it the attention it deserves. Spend anytime online and you see the same themes over again, name plus age, name plus birth year, name plus 123, random names, movie or TV names, names that might not make sense, and plenty of rude names. All this says about you is that you know how to use a random name generator. You can do so much better!
Generating Discord Usernames
If you want to be taken seriously, gain a solid, respectable reputation, or just have people to listen to you online, your username has to be a good one. Name yourself something dumb, rude, juvenile or offensive and you’ll likely have trouble interacting with people and teaming up with them in-game. Of course, Discord isn’t just about gaming anymore. All sorts of interests are represented there, which means you should give your username even more thought so it can be relevant on a lot of different channels.
The first thing you need to do before trying to come up with anything is to think about how you want to be perceived on Discord. How do you want people to think of you? What impression do you want to create? Are you a hardcore Fortnite gamer with little interest in doing anything else on Discord? Or are you running a self-help group on the server for people who want to improve their lives?
As you can imagine, those two user types are completely different and will have different target audiences. Knowing how you want to be perceived and who you’re likely to be talking to is key. You’ll want a user name that embraces your presence, your passion, and what you hope to accomplish on Discord.
Once you know who you’re going to be talking to, you can come up with a suitable username.
Use Your Gamer Tag
Using your gamer tag or specific game username if you’re on game servers is the simplest option. It helps others identify you and makes it easier to team up in-game, find each other anywhere, and adds that link between the game you’re all discussing and your antics in-game. Then again, maybe you want to have a sense of anonymity, so you can let your gamer persona fly, while your Discord is for more serious matters. If anonymity is for you, keep reading.
Some people love them, but there are some downsides to these random generators. You could try letting an algorithm choose your username if you like; it definitely won’t hurt to give a free generator a spin to see if something strikes your fancy. Websites such as SpinXO, Rum and Monkey, Screen Name Generator and others can get the job done if you don’t want to create your own. Generally speaking, these sites allow you to enter a few facts about yourself, then spit back possible word combos that might make a good username. On the upside, you don’t have to think too hard. On the downside, it will be a case of spinning the wheel a couple hundred times before you find something that might work. Plus, since you don’t have a personal connection to the username chosen, you might find it hard to remember. There is nothing worse than forgetting your username when you’re in the middle of a chat.
Say A Little About Yourself
If you cannot use a game username, you’ll have to use a little more imagination. I wouldn’t suggest using your name or birthdate, age or anything like that as they make you identifiable off-screen and in your personal life. Plus, your age changes, so Bobby14 will soon be about of date. Honestly, no one wants to be 14 forever!
Use a hobby, favorite book, superhero, historical figure, song, artist, pet or something personal to you. If the name is commonplace and already taken, mix and match the name with another or add a special character to differentiate it, if the server admin allows. Let’s say your cat is Harvey, and you love the Harry Potter series. These books are full of fun references that can be twisted and turned into tons of material. WingardiumHarvioso, for example.
Use A Different Language
If you have a go-to username that is already taken, check it out in a different language. Google Translate is your friend here. See what your favorite name is in German, Italian, Latin, Spanish, French, Cantonese, Russian, or whatever. You would be surprised at how different and cool an ordinary word or name is in another language! Even something as simple as the last snack you had could be a fun username. “sgon mefus” may look like something fantastic, but it’s simply Welsh for “strawberry scones.”
This also adds an air of mystery and intelligence to your username which can create exactly the right impression.
I always suggest this, and with good reason. Keeping a notepad next to your computer and writing down cool names or usernames of other players is a great way to come up with one of your own. Inspiration rarely appears on demand, so writing something down when it does appear is the way to go.
If you use someone else’s name, make it your own. Change something, personalize it, anything! Just don’t blatantly copy it. Take inspiration from everywhere, too! Spotify, Netflix, Wikipedia, forums, Reddit- anywhere you go online is filled with words, names, places, and events. Write names down, build up a list and use it for inspiration when you need to.
What To Do When Your Perfect Username Is Already Taken
One of the challenges that we haven’t touched on too much yet is the possibility of your desired username already being used. To be fair, this is a rare occurrence on Discord. Discord couples your username with a random number between 0000 and 9999, which means that 9999 people can have the same username. So, the odds of a particular username being unavailable to you are extremely slim- but not technically impossible.
Of course, other platforms are a little less forgiving when it comes to choosing a unique username, so even though it’s not a problem on Discord, it is still a problem on the internet at large.
If your desired username is unavailable, you have a few options. The most obvious and most used solution is to add numbers to the end of your username (CoolGuy29388). Although this will usually work, it can make it harder for other people to remember your username, unless you pick numbers with some relevance (CoolGuy1984).
Another common method of securing a username is to add “X”s or “O”s to the ends of it (“xCoolGuyx”, “xXCoolGuyXx”, “oCoolGuyo”, or “oOCoolGuyOo”). Again, this will work in most cases, though it’s a little overused at this point. Another popular and overused method is to use “leetspeak”, which means incorporating numbers into your username (C001Guy). This can make your username more difficult to remember as well, which is something to keep in mind.
For something a little cleaner, you can add a few words to your username if your base username is already taken. The simplest way to do this is to add “The”, “TheReal”, “TheOnly”, or “TheOriginal” to your username (TheOriginalCoolGuy). This is a great approach as it’s still easy to remember and type in, plus it’s less likely to be taken.
It isn’t easy to generate cool usernames for any app, especially Discord. I don’t know anyone who can instantly come up with something cool on demand, which is why I find it easier to plan ahead and take notes.
