How To Hide Comments on Instagram Live
Whether you’re concerned about abusive content or you’re simply tired of seeing those little hearts pop up all over live videos that you watch and ruining the moment, there’s a way to enjoy your Instagram Live Video experience without having to worry about comments. After all, just because you’re watching the same video as other people doesn’t mean you’re obligated to care about what all of those other people have to say about the video.
In this article, we cover the latest methods for hiding live video comments while you view the videos. If you’re looking to learn about how to disable or filter comments on live videos that you make, check out our article from last December.
The Current Experience
As it stands, when you watch someone’s live video you’re subject to a torrent of emojis and opinions from other people watching the video. You can’t simply watch the video, you have to be part of the whole experience; Instagram has decided that is non-optional. That can be annoying for a lot of users that just want to see what their favorite accounts are up to.
Hiding Comments on Mobile
Here’s the rub. There was once a simple and easy way to hide live commenting as you watched. But a more recent Instagram update did away with the concept of simple.
It used to be that all you had to do was tap once on the video itself to make all of those comments and icons disappear. Then you had only to tap again to bring them back.
Now, if you tap on the video, then you fast forward or rewind it by 15 seconds (if you’re not viewing it live, of course). This is handy, to be sure. But how do you make the comments disappear?
So far, there’s no reported method. But you can bet Instagram will have something waiting in the wings for a future update, since getting rid of an existing feature almost always leads to pushback. In the meantime, you’ll have to view your comment-free videos via your desktop.
Hiding Comments on Desktop
This can be done using the Chrome IG Story extension. If that sounds familiar, it’s because the same extension makes it possible to download other people’s Instagram videos to your computer. Incidentally, it also allows you to view those videos without all of the commenting noise.
- Open Google Chrome.
- Find the Chrome IG Story extension.
- Click Add to Chrome.
- Click Add Extension.
The extension may take a moment to install. When it’s finished, you’ll see a popup announcing that it’s ready for use. You’ll be able to access the extension at any time by looking to the upper right hand corner of your browser window and clicking on the icon.
Now you can download videos you want to watch and view them without any comments or flurries of emojis. Simply go to Instagram.com and do the following:
- Click on the extension icon.
- Choose from the list of your friends’ Stories (the live videos should show up here after they’ve ended) or browse for the live video of your choice.
- Click the download icon to the right.
- Open the zip file that downloads.
- Double-click on the file therein to view the video.
Now you can view the video comment-free whenever you’d like. This probably sounds like common sense to most of you reading this, but note that you can’t download a live video until after it’s completed, so if your buddy is in the thick of it, then you’re going to have to either wait until the live video has ended or you’re just going to have to put up with the comments if you want to experience the video live.
