How to Remove the Crown on Discord

It sure is good to be the king. You are the owner and leader of a hierarchy, which means you make all the rules that those wanting to remain in your ‘kingdom’ must follow. There’s even an accompanying crown that promotes recognition to go along with all of your kingly duties.

The same can be said for a Discord server owner. You are the head of your potential community and, as such inherit all of the responsibilities (short of life and death) when it comes to running it. Crown included.

Currently, as it is, the crown icon cannot be toggled on or off. It’s a permanent fixture while using the basic features that Discord offers its users. However, there is a workaround to remove the crown from your username and essentially disable it on the surface.

What Does the Crown Mean?

In Discord, a crown is an icon displayed next to the Admin users’ name in a server. All you need to do to see this icon is navigate to your server and look at the member’s list to the right. Here, you will see all of the members in your server and your crown badge.

This crown symbolizes who controls the server and shows others who’s in charge and who they can contact for any issues. For some, it comes with a sense of pride or responsibility, while others may want to monitor their servers undetected or unbothered.

When a new Discord server is created, the leader will automatically have a gold crown displayed alongside his or her username in the members’ list area.

How to Remove the Crown Icon

If you really want to give up that sweet, sweet crown that tells your members they should /bow before they can address you in text chat, this is what you’ll need to do.

You could also create the role for your other admins, including yourself, if you’d rather share the responsibilities with other members of your community. Regardless of the choice you make, it has to be a role with admin privileges, and this is how you do it:

Open your Discord Server and tap on the arrow icon in the upper left.
Click on Server Settings in the dropdown menu.
Click on Roles.
Click on a role.
Toggle the switch next to Display role members separately from online members on. Then, click Save Changes at the bottom.
Refresh Discord using the Ctrl + R (or CMD + R) keyboard shortcut. The Crown icon will no longer appear next to your name in the Members’ list.

Note: If the crown remains, go to each role and toggle the switch off.

You can also make an entirely new role with admin privileges that is just a dummy role. This means that you have no other use for the role aside from the topic of the article.

Launch Discord from either the browser or desktop app and login with your credentials.
With the Discord window open, look to the server list on the left. Select the server that you own and click on it to pull it up.
Next, go to the Server Settings.
- You can do this by clicking on the server’s name, located at the top-left of the center console. It will be a drop-down. Click it to open it and then click on Server Settings from the list.
From the menu on the right locate and click on Roles. The window will be available on the right.
In the new window, you should see a list of your roles. Off to the right of the Roles header, you’ll find a + icon. Click this icon to create a new role.
Your role will need a name, so you should give it one. The color matters less if it’s just a dummy account but if you’d like to color code your roles, go ahead and choose one from those available.
Under the ROLE SETTINGS section, toggle the Display role members separately from online members switch to on.
Then, under the GENERAL PERMISSIONS section, toggle the Administrator switch to on.
When toggling the switches, a pop-up will come up from the bottom letting you know “Careful – you have unsaved changes!” Click on Save Changes once you’re done.
Close out of Discord and re-open it.

If the crown is still visible, add the role to yourself by:

Heading back to the Server Settings of your Discord server.
From the menu on the left, click on Members.
- You can find it under the USER MANAGEMENT section.
In the open window, locate your name and click on the + icon off to the right of it.
From the options, locate the newly created admin role and click on it.
- If you have a lot of roles to choose from, you can type in the name of the role in the text field provided to find it quicker.

The role is now assigned to you, and your crown should be gone.

Understand that at any time you provide another member with this particular role that they too will have administrative powers and permissions. They’ll be able to bypass channel permissions as well as create all new roles if they choose. The only thing they cannot do is delete the server or dethrone you. So no coups to worry about, but it still provides a lot of power to someone who may not be able to handle the responsibilities. Never give it to anyone that you cannot trust completely.

Managing Discord

Removing your crown is easy in Discord, it’s all about assigning roles. Just remember to keep in mind the power of roles and the risks of assigning them arbitrarily.
