If you’re a dedicated follower of celebrities, or want to keep track of the ebb and flow of social media, you may be interested to know who has the most Instagram followers. Given how massively popular this social network has become, it acts as something of a barometer of how hot a particular celebrity is at any given moment. As Instagram regularly publishes subscriber numbers for its members, Instagram follower rankings are easy to find out.

The results may surprise you. There have been a few position changes since the end of last year. This are accurate as of October 2017 and as published by this website.
Here are the top 25 celebrities on Instagram according to their follower numbers. (Disclaimer: the @instagram account has almost twice as many followers as the next most-followed account, but we’re not about to give Instagram the crown for being the most popular account on the site they run themselves. Read to the bottom to find out who’s the most popular account on Instagram, besides Instagram itself.)
25. Real Madrid C.F.
One of the most popular soccer (sorry–football) teams in the world, Spain’s Real Madrid has been creeping up behind their rival FC Barcelona for a few months. In May, Real Madrid took Barcelona’s spot as the #1 team in their league. In July, they also overtook Barcelona on Instagram to take the #25 spot. Now they are holding onto it with almost 53 million followers, about a half million more than their rival.
24. Kevin Hart
Actor and comedian Kevin Hart is up next. The Little Fockers and Soul Plane star has 54 million Instagram followers.
No introduction needed here, really, although the uninitiated might be confused about who “@badgalriri” with the stick-figure profile pic is. It’s the prolific singer Rihanna, who has 57 million Instagram followers.
22. Victoria’s Secret
Lingerie brand Victoria’s Secret is number 22 on the list, with almost 57 million followers. No doubt these are all women interested in stylish and well-fitting underwear; there is certainly no reason for millions of men to follow this account.
21. Kourtney Kardashian
I had expected the first of the Kardashians to be higher on the list, but Kourtney Kardashian is 21st with almost 59 million followers.
20. Demi Lovato
Next comes Demi Lovato, the singer, actress, and Disney star. She is another wholesome personality who is more interesting than the usual, with a lively Instagram account that has 61 million followers right now.
19. Katy Perry
Katy Perry is big into female empowerment which, alongside her natural talent, makes for a popular combo and nets her 67 million Instagram followers. With lots of images including her posing with her grandmother, Hillary Clinton, and other notable women, she is definitely one to follow.
18. Jennifer Lopez
With 69 million followers, Jennifer Lopez is holding steady at number 18. The singer and actress is one of the best-known celebrities in the country, having been the first person to release a number-1 album and movie in the same week (J.Lo and The Wedding Planner, respectively, in January 2001).
17. Khloe Kardashian
Khloe Kardashian is the second Kardashian in our list and enjoys quite the following, despite slipping down a few ranks. She has 69 million Instagram followers who enjoy the wide variety of self-promoting images she posts online.
16. Miley Cyrus
Former Disney child star turned singer Miley Cyrus held onto the number 16 spot this month with 72 million Instagram followers. She is refreshing in that her account reflects more normality than the others in this list, and features quite a few funny videos and self-deprecating selfies.
The sports brand Nike holds the number 15 spot on Instagram with 74 million followers, who enjoy a steady stream of pictures of athletes “just doing it.”
14. Lionel Messi
Voted the best soccer player in the world, Lionel Messi is up next, having grown his following to almost 81 million Instagram followers. It seems he has a large fan base both on and off the soccer field. In August he climbed to number 14, and if he keeps growing at this rate fellow futbolista Neymar Junior had better watch his back.
13. National Geographic
Besides Instagram itself, National Geographic is the most popular Instagram account that belongs to a brand instead of a person. National Geographic boasts 81 million Instagram followers, who enjoy its pictures of cute animals and fantastic locations.
12. Neymar Junior
In the #12 spot on the list is the Brazilian soccer player Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior. In July he switched teams from FC Barcelona to the French Paris Saint-Germain FC, and meanwhile climbed to 82 million Instagram followers. The player also has a huge YouTube following thanks to being both sociable and photogenic.
11. Nicki Minaj
At number 11 is rapper, singer, and songwriter Nicki Minaj with 83 million followers. Her posts of herself wearing some interesting outfits and colorful wigs get her an ever-increasing army of fans.
10. Kendall Jenner
Another Jenner family member on the list, model Kendall Jenner holds steady at the number 10 spot. Given the style of her images, it’s no wonder she has 83 million Instagram followers.
9. Justin Bieber
Singer, songwriter, and millennial teen heartthrob Justin Bieber returned to Instagram this year (after vowing last year that he never would) and rocketed back to the top. He’s stabilized in the rankings at number 9, with almost 92 million followers.
8. The Rock
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is the first male actor on the list (and for that matter, the only professional wrestler on the list, and the only person so far being floated for a 2020 presidential run). With 94 million Instagram followers, he’s holding onto the number-8 spot. The Rock has been in a range of movies of all kinds and all levels of box office success. Nevertheless, he seems quite a cool guy to know.
7. Kylie Jenner
Kylie Jenner has 98 million Instagram followers. I’m sure none of them whatsoever follow her in anticipation of more bikini shots. Nevertheless, her pout and selfie habit keep her in the top ten.
6. Kim Kardashian West
Kim Kardashian West climbed to almost 103 million Instagram followers this month. Another celeb with a selfie habit, entrepreneur and self-publicist Kim is one of the most influential women on social media.
5. Taylor Swift
Another immensely talented female artist, Taylor Swift is holding onto number 5 on this list with nearly 104 million Instagram followers–pretty impressive when you consider that as part of her promotion for her latest album, she deleted all her Instagram pictures! She remains one of the most popular celebrities on Instagram, partly down to her being one of the best-selling female artists of all time, and partly because she is interesting in her own right.
It’s no surprise to anyone to see Beyoncé so high in this list. She’s immensely popular, immensely talented, and more wholesome than a lot of other musicians. With platinum-selling records, a few acting gigs behind her, and 17 Grammy awards, it’s no wonder her numbers have exploded to keep up with the pack, totaling 107 million Instagram followers.
3. Cristiano Ronaldo
Cristiano Ronaldo plays soccer for Real Madrid, a team whose own Instagram account now makes this list in its own right. Ronaldo was regarded as the player best in the world until Lionel Messi took the crown. He is still on target to be the best footballer on Instagram with 112 million followers.
2. Ariana Grande
Ariana Grande, formerly of Broadway and Nickelodeon and currently a singer in her own right, has shot up to number 2 and has 114 million followers. Right now she posts a little bit of everything.
1. Selena Gomez
The actress and singer Selena Gomez has held onto her position at the very top of Instagram. She is no longer the only celebrity to break 100 million followers, but she currently towers over the rankings with just shy of 128 million of them. She keeps her accounts up to date with goings on in her life, fashion shoots, and a whole lot more.
