How to Post Moments in WeChat Without a Photo

Moments are very similar to Instagram and Snapchat Stories in that they are a snapshot of your life published beside your usual posts. They can be of anything you like but often work best if you’re seeing, visiting, experiencing or doing something unusual. They can be about whatever you like though, which is what makes them so good. Did you know you can post Moments without a picture in WeChat?

Arguably, the image is what tells the story in any Story or Moment but you don’t have to include an image if you don’t want to. If you found an inspirational quote or someone said something profound, an image is not always necessary. In those cases, a text-only Moment is ideal.

Posting text-only Moments in WeChat

There is absolutely nothing wrong with posting a text-only Moment in WeChat. They aren’t always as interesting as ones with an image or as engaging but, depending on their content they can tell a story equally as well as an image Moment. You just have to be more creative about what you say.

Posting a text-only Moment is almost identical to creating a standard one but with a crucial difference.

  1. Open WeChat and select Discover at the bottom of the page.
  2. Select Moments on the next page.
  3. Press and hold the camera icon in the top right.
  4. Add your Moment text in the box that appears on screen.
  5. Select Location, Share to or @Mention as you normally would.
  6. Select Post in the top right of the screen.

As you can see, the process is much the same as creating a standard Moment but instead of tapping the camera icon, you long press. This brings up the text box immediately rather than presenting you with the option to take a picture or use a gallery image.

Aside from that, the rest is the same. You can add your location if you like, control who sees what or mention individual contacts within the Moment.

Posting image Moments in WeChat

I have shown you how to post a text-only Moment and mentioned a couple of times how similar to posting an image Moment it is. If you haven’t done it before, that doesn’t help you very much does it? I’ll now show you how to post an image-based Moment for comparison.

WeChat Moments containing images are by far the more popular version. That doesn’t mean the other is wrong, just that images are a very powerful tool in storytelling and if you can use some, you should. You can use multiple images just like in Insta and can tell the same kind of stories as you can in Insta too.

  1. Open WeChat and select Discover at the bottom of the page.
  2. Select Moments from the list that appears.
  3. Select the camera icon in the top right. Just a tap and not a long press.
  4. Select Take Photo or Choose Existing to use a gallery image.
  5. Add a caption in the text box.
  6. Select Location, Share to or @Mention if you want to.
  7. Select Post in the top right of the screen.

Tapping the camera icon brings up the camera app and the option to select an image from your phone gallery or take a new image. Once you select or take an image, you are taken to the same text box window you see above to complete your Moment. From then on, the rest of the process is identical.

Using location in WeChat Moments

WeChat gives you the opportunity to add your current location when creating a Moment. This is an individual setting per Moment. If you select to add your location, a blue link will appear underneath saying where you were at the time. You can also customize this to anything you like. It’s a neat feature that offers a little extra element of fun to the Moment.

  1. Select Location when you’re finalizing your WeChat Moment.
  2. Select Search at the top instead of choosing a location from the list.
  3. Type the location you want to appear there.
  4. Select Create New Location when it appears on screen.
  5. Type your location in full and select Done.

You can add anything here from ‘the fourth moon of Endor’ to ‘The Pit of Doom’ or anything you like. It’s a little extra amusement you can provide to anyone reading your moment and uses the location feature but with a twist.

I’m sure there are lots of other hidden tricks you can use when creating Moments in WeChat but that’s the only one I know. Do you know of any others? Share them below if you do!
