TAGGING People on Instagram Explained!

Tagging is one of the more social aspects of social media and done at the right time and in the right context, is a great way to share moments or memories online. It’s an excellent way to provoke conversation, share something momentous or interesting and to add a layer of interaction. This tutorial will show you how to tag someone in an Instagram Story.

Tagging has been around forever and is a way of linking an image, comment, post or video to a person who is either featured in it or interested in it. Facebook has used tagging for years and for the most part it works very well indeed.

When you tag someone, you add a layer to a post with a hyperlink to that person’s profile. It alerts that person to the Story or post you uploaded and will feature it on their profile. It will also let other people see who else features in a post too. If you have tagged in Facebook, Instagram uses an almost identical system for adding and removing tags.

I think tagging is such an important feature that I’ll also show you how to tag in Instagram posts and comments too.

Tag someone in an Instagram Story

Tagging is done through a selection during Story creation. As well as adding a title and description to your Story, you can also tag people. Here’s how.

  1. Open Instagram and swipe to open Story mode as usual.
  2. Create your Story.
  3. Add a sticker from the peeling face sticker icon at the top of the screen.
  4. Select the @mention sticker from the selection.
  5. Type the name of the person you want to tag and select them from the list.
  6. Edit, move or resize the tag sticker as required.
  7. Post your Story in the normal way.

You can tag up to ten people per Story. Each will receive a push notification in their own Instagram telling them you tagged them and they will be able to see what you have posted.

Remove a tag from an Instagram Story

In the unlikely even someone tags you in an Instagram Story and you don’t want to be tagged, you can remove it. Much like you can in Facebook, you can select the option to remove the tag and it will disappear from everyone’s image.

  1. Select the Story you’re tagged in.
  2. Select your username that appears.
  3. Select Remote Tag or Remove Me from Post.
  4. Select Remove or Yes I’m sure to confirm.

The tag will be removed but the original Story, image or video will remain just without the tag. You can do this on posts, comments or whatever you like in Instagram.

Tag someone in an Instagram post

Tagging someone in a post is very similar to doing it in a Story.

  1. Create your post as you normally would.
  2. When you get to setting a caption, select Tag People from the page.
  3. Select a friends face or element you want to tag.
  4. Select ‘Who’s This’ from the page and search for the person.
  5. Select their profile from the list.
  6. Select the checkmark or Done when you’re finished.
  7. Post as normal.

Like Stories, you can repeat the above for up to ten people in a single image and all will be tagged. They will also receive the notification telling them they have been tagged.

Tag someone in an Instagram comment

If you want to bring someone into a conversation on Instagram, that is just as straightforward. It uses the ‘@’ feature like other social networks and works in exactly the same way.

  1. Add your comment to a post or Story.
  2. Add ‘@NAME’ to the comment. Change NAME for the person’s username you want to tag.
  3. Select them from the list.
  4. Finish your comment and select Post.

As usual, they will see a push notification alerting them to the comment and tag and will be able to respond as they see fit.

Not everyone wants to be tagged in every image or comment you make so use the feature only when appropriate. Some people are more than happy to be tagged and others not so much. While there is the ability to remove a tag, it’s a pain if you didn’t wan to be tagged in the first place so know who you’re tagging and how they will react to it.
