The Best OLED Laptops – April 2019
Laptop screens have come a long way since their humble inception. Those of us who were around to witness the advent of the first generation of laptop screens can recall a jumble of massive pixels that only emitted black and white tones, and that would often fail to the point that entire chunks of the screen would simply go dark without warning.
Thankfully those days are over, and you’d be hard-pressed to find even a budget laptop that doesn’t offer a relatively impressive screen that can be reliably used for everything from gaming to watching HD movies.
Still, some screens are inherently better than others, and the world’s leading computer manufacturers are always trying to outdo one another by packing more pixels into increasingly large screens for less money.
So perhaps it makes sense that some companies have decided to forgo the traditional pixel rat race all together and opt for an entirely new technology that’s making waves among users who crave only the highest-quality viewing experience on their laptop.
We’re talking of course about OLED (short for Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology, which offers an entirely new viewing experience across the board. Instead of using the traditional backlighting features that drive most LCDs, each individual pixel in an OLED display creates its own light—meaning that images are inherently sharper, richer, and more accurate.
OLED displays also tend to be brighter, easier on the eyes, and more power efficient—making them an obvious choice for creative professionals who want to achieve the most accurate and satisfying color results, even if they’ve been staring at their screen all day.
So if you’re someone who’s craving a more robust and enjoyable viewing experience on your laptop, check out our list of the best OLED laptops money can buy.
It’s important to keep in mind that this list focusses primarily on the benefits and uses of OLED screens in the laptops in question, and less on the features of the laptop itself. Different users obviously have different needs and requirements when it comes to buying the perfect laptop, and it would be nearly impossible to create an OLED list while taking into consideration the almost endless other variables that go into crafting the perfect laptop for a variety of different purposes.
But the good news is that OLED screens lend themselves mostly to relatively affordable laptops that you won’t find in the Apple Store. This is a good thing for creative professionals on a budget who understandably don’t want to dish out a cool three grand on the latest MacBook Pro just to take advantage of its admittedly awesome screen.
This Lenovo ThinkPad, while still expensive by most standards, offers an incredible OLED display along with an impressive amount of processing power and RAM that can power even the most ambitious projects.
Ideal for mobile and multitasking users, this compact laptop is incredibly lightweight and comes with an innovative hybrid design that makes it easy to perform an almost limitless number of tasks on the go.
Its 14-inch screen is fully convertible into tablet formation, and it features a full-sized, backlit keyboard that’s spill-resistant. (Another impressive feature of this keyboard is that the keys retract automatically when they’re not being used—meaning that you’ll be able to keep your converted laptop flat on the table while you work.)
It weights only 2.9 pounds so you’ll be able to easily take it with you on the go even for extended trips, and the OLED touch display utilizes self-lit pixels that render a much wider range of highly accurate colors, so your work will be not only rich and more vibrant but also far more accurate—which is incredibly important if you work as a professional designer who needs to have illustrations rendered in several different mediums.
Your Yoga comes with a lockable stylus pen that recharges when its connected to the laptop, and you’ll be able to use it to draft emails or even write full essays or reports by hand on the screen.
Alright, so we may have been jumping the gun a bit when we said that OLED laptops tend to be more affordable than the more mainstream laptops you’d find at an Apple Store. We still stand behind that, but we couldn’t craft an OLED list without mentioning this admittedly expensive but super-cool powerhouse of a laptop.
Ideal for pro-level apps like FinalCut and Pro Tools but equally well-suited for intense gaming and all-around processing, this computer should be taken into serious consideration if you have the right amount of cash to throw around.
It packs a 7th generation Intel Core i7 processors with 6MB cash that can be taken to 3.8GHz when Turbo Boost is engaged—more than enough processing power for most high-level tasks regardless of whether you’re working in video or music production.
You’ll get 16GB of Dual Channel DDR4 RAM that makes multitasking a breeze, and the 13.3-inch OLED screen delivers a truly stunning array of colors that are rich and warm while still being crisp and detailed—a rare combination of attributes that makes life much easier for visual artists and digital designers.
You’ll also get a 512GB SSD drive (so you’ll be able to worry much less about losing your data in a random hard drive crash), and the keyboard is fully backlit in case you need to work without adequate room lighting.
And unlike some of the other popular and less-expensive OLED models, this laptop has a wide array of ports—including SuperSpeed USB ports, Thunderbolt 3 ports, and a DisplayPort connection—so you won’t need to worry about purchasing an endless stream on external hubs and dongles in order to get the connectivity you need.
Bringing things down to a slightly more reasonable price point we find this incredibly sleek and effortlessly stylish Samsung Galaxy Book, which is ideal for anyone who wants to experience the brilliance of an OLED screen on a laptop that’s incredibly lightweight and portable.
In the not-so-distant past, Samsung didn’t have much of a foot in the door when it came to the laptop industry. Known mostly for their TVs and home electronics, Samsung wasn’t even considered to be a serious competitor with companies like IBM and Apple.
But now, Samsung is churning out an increasingly impressive and powerful line of laptops that are giving some of the larger and more reputable companies a run for their money, thanks to both the laptops’ quality and affordability.
This Galaxy Book is no exception, thanks to a 7th generation Intel Core i5 processor that runs at 2.5GHz (and up to 3.1GHz with Turbo Boost engaged) and 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM that’s more than capable of carrying out a wide range of common tasks at once. You also get a 128GB SSD hard drive along with an S pen and detachable keyboard for on-the-go convenience and drafting.
We were also impressed with the extensive battery life and fast charging speed of this tiny-yet-mighty laptop—with a charge time of roughly three hours and a video playback time of about nine hours on a single charge.
Unless you’ve been living under a very large rock for the past several decades, you’ve doubtlessly heard of HP laptops, which reign supreme when it comes to combining portability and affordability.
Although not as inherently powerful as some of the other OLED laptops on the market, this workhorse computer has more than enough power to fuel most projects, and its build quality should be especially appealing for those of us who are constantly taking our laptops with us on the go.
You get the latest version of Windows 10 Home 64, an Intel Core i7 processor that runs at 2.5GHz, and a 256GB SSD drive that can store more than enough photos, movies, and files for the average user.
The OLED screen on this convertible laptop is also especially impressive, since its embedded in edge-to-edge glass and features multitouch technology that makes life much easier for creative professionals, photo editors, and illustrators.
You’ll also get an HP TrueVision fully-HD webcam, along with integrated Dual Digital microphones—along with three USB 3 ports, an HDMI port that can be used to connect external monitors, a MiniDisplay port, and a headphone/microphone combo input.
We were also impressed with the sound quality of this laptop, since most of its competitors lack speakers that produce the kind of low-end punch and high-end clarity that most audiophiles know and love. But thanks to a pair of Bang & Olufsen speakers, this laptop is able to crank out your favorite tunes with ease.
