The Best Portable Gaming Monitors that You Can Also Use for Work Purposes

It is inexpensive and simple to connect your laptop to one or more external monitors if you have a sizable, permanent desk at your home or place of business. However, if you’re on the go, a 27-inch monitor won’t fit in your backpack nor on a small hotel or coworking table. The greatest portable monitors can help with that.

With a portable monitor – as its name suggests – it’s easy to travel from one place to another and still be able to enjoy your favorite titles while you’re out. But that’s not all.

Having a good portable monitor also means you can still get to perform your duties at work as most portable monitors these days are designed for productivity work, which is very important these days. Luckily, the market has countless of them.

Whether you’re looking for a portable monitor for work or for entertainment, you’ve come to the right place as we’ve rounded up some of the best portable gaming monitors on the market that can also double as a device you can use for work.

01 Asus ROG Strix XG16AHPE

A portable monitor designed specifically for gaming, the Asus ROG Strix ROG XG16AHPE features a 144 Hz refresh rate and is Nvidia G-Sync compatible thanks to its IPS panel. That is a welcome change from the conventional 60 Hz screens used in this class. Due to its internal battery, the ROG XG16AHPE is also a force to be reckoned with in the endurance department. The ROG XG16AHPE features a diagonal measurement of 15.6 inches and a 1920 x 1080 resolution.

Although the IPS panel in our tests thankfully offered decent viewing angles, it does have a peculiar kickstand that runs diagonally across the back of the monitor. However, we discovered that the ROG XG16AHPE can quickly switch to portrait mode because of its unconventional design. The 7,800 mAh built-in battery mentioned earlier has a 3-hour runtime while operating at 144 Hz. Our runtimes managed to be right around the Asus manufacturing estimate in our testing at 144 Hz. Although the Asus ROG ROG XG16AHPE costs $399, it performs admirably in terms of gaming and color. A further benefit of the built-in battery is that it allows you to operate in the field with fewer wires.

Pros

  • Built-in battery provides up to 3 hours of runtime
  • Included carrying case
  • Support for 144 Hz refresh rates and Nvidia G-Sync

Cons

  • Pricey
  • Odd kickstand limits tilt angles

Specification

  • Price $349.00
  • Screen Size 16 Inches
  • Refresh Rate 144 Hz
  • Display Resolution Maximum 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Display Type LED
  • Item Dimensions 8.88 x 14.19 x 0.46 inches
  • Item Weight 1.98 lbs

02 Asus ZenScreen Go MB16AWP

With the amazing 15.6-inch Full HD portable display, the ZenScreen Go MB16AWP, Asus went above and beyond. With its Full HD IP panel and 60 Hz refresh rate, the ZenScreen Go MB16AWP may appear to be a standard entry in this market, but Asus has incorporated a number of features that set it apart. The device has an integrated 7,800 mAh battery that can run for three hours before needing to be recharged. Additionally, the battery could be charged from empty to full in just over two hours, according to our testing.

The ZenScreen Go MB16AWP’s inbuilt Wi-Fi connectivity is another noteworthy feature. Without using a USB-C or HDMI connection, you can mirror the screen of your device to the ZenScreen Go MB16AWP if Wi-Fi is turned on. This makes using this portable monitor fully wire-free when combined with the built-in battery. With support for Windows, macOS, Chrome OS, Android, and iOS, Asus offers a wide range of compatibility.

Other features include two USB-C connections, one Mini-HDMI port, and an integrated accelerometer that makes it simple for the ZenScreen Go MB16AWP to move between portrait and landscape modes. It is difficult not to recommend the ZenScreen Go MB16AWP when great color performance across sRGB and DCI-P3 color spaces is included. The Asus ZenScreen Go MB16AWP costs around $469, which isn’t cheap. But it provides a lot of value in terms of features and performance.

Pros

  • Excellent color performance
  • Built-in stand
  • Integrated battery
  • Wi-Fi mirroring support

Cons

  • Plentiful features add weight
  • Expensive
  • Wireless connectivity limited to screen mirroring

Specification

  • Price ‎$449.99
  • Screen Size 15.6 Inches
  • Refresh Rate 60 Hz
  • Display Resolution Maximum 1920 x 1080 Pixels

03 ViewSonic VX1755

Similar to the Viewsonic TD1655, the Viewsonic VX1755 has a black front, minimum bezels, a color pattern, and downward-firing speakers. High-quality plastic was used in its construction, with metal being saved for the pop-out stand. Similar to the ROG XG16AHPE, it supports 144 Hz frame rates and supports AMD FreeSync Premium Adaptive-Sync. The VX1755 can easily be used with an Android smartphone (through USB-C), an Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5 console, as well as a laptop to expand your workspace or just provide a larger screen to game on.

The color performance was similar to the VD1655, which is below average when it came time to hit our benchmark stand. Only 45.5 percent of the DCI-P3 color space was measured, compared to 64.2% of the sRGB color space. The brightness was tested at 250.6 nits, which is exactly in line with ViewSonic’s claim of 250 nits. Despite having a bigger screen and supporting a refresh rate of 144 Hz, the ViewSonic VX1755 costs $299, the same as the TD1655. That would be a great price for a portable monitor that is designed for gaming and has a sturdy construction.

Pros

  • Large 17.2-inch display
  • Supports 144 Hz refresh rates
  • Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync support
  • High-quality magnetic cover to protect the display

Cons

  • Mediocre brightness and color accuracy
  • So-so Physical OSD controls

Specification

  • Price ‎$259.99
  • Screen Size 17 Inches
  • Refresh Rate 144 Hz
  • Display Resolution Maximum 1920 x 1080

04 Lenovo ThinkVision M14t

With a 14-inch diagonal, the Lenovo ThinkVision M14t is a little bit smaller than most other portable monitors. It has an 8-bit IPS panel and retains a 1920 x 1080 resolution at 60 frames per second. Although the ThinkVision M14t from Lenovo claims to be 300 nits bright, our light meter only measured a maximum of 250 nits. The monitor’s support for 10-point multi-touch input is one of its most notable features.

You can also write or draw on the screen using the bundled stylus. When drawing, the stylus offers various levels of sensitivity, and Windows 10 and Windows 11’s built-in handwriting recognition can translate your handwriting into ASCII text. In terms of connectivity, we should point out that the ThinkVision M14t can only be connected to a laptop using USB-C (DisplayPort Alt Mode), which is a restriction. The majority of monitors in this price range (and lower) at least provide HDMI connectivity as a substitute.

Pros

  • Light weight
  • Built-in kickstand
  • Great color and brightness
  • Included stylus

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Only works over USB-C alt mode

Specification

  • Price $451.17
  • Screen Size 14 Inches
  • Refresh Rate 60 Hz
  • Display Resolution Maximum 2560 x 1440
  • Display Type LCD
  • Item Dimensions 8.92 x 12.73 x 0.55 inches
  • Item Weight 1.54 lbs

05 Asus ROG Strix XG17AHPE

144 Hz is more than enough for the majority of gamers, especially when using a portable display, but the Asus ROG Strix XG17AHPE can do more than that with its 240 Hz refresh rate. It is a terrific option if you’re an eSports gamer and require even more speed. If you thought the Asus ROG Strix ROG XG16AHPE was powerful, wait until you see this. The ROG Strix XG17AHPE, its overachieving twin, ventures further into enthusiast gamer territory with a bigger 17.3-inch IPS display.

The monitor’s connectivity options include two USB-C ports (DisplayPort Alt-Mode enabled) and Micro-HDMI. It has a 3ms reaction time, a maximum brightness of 300 nits, and a 1,000:1 contrast ratio. Given its size, the Strix XG17AHPE weighs 2.3 pounds, which is a little on the heavy side. But that extra weight also comes with a 7,800 mAh battery that supports Power Delivery 3.0 and can be recharged over USB-C.

In our tests, the monitor’s battery life was approximately 2 hours when operating at 240 Hz, 80 percent brightness, and maximum loudness. On the other end of the spectrum, runtimes increased to four and a half hours when the refresh rate was set to 60 Hz with 50 percent brightness. The ROG Strix XG17AHPE is a great option if you’re looking for a portable display that can handle output from a laptop, gaming console, or even a Raspberry Pi.

Pros

  • HDMI, USB-C and USB-A connectivity
  • Loud speakers
  • Great viewing angles
  • Easy-to-access OSD with many options

Cons

  • More expensive than a good 240 Hz desktop monitor
  • Questionable origami stand
  • Included cover doesn't provide much protection

Specification

  • Price $468.82
  • Screen Size 17.3 Inches
  • Refresh Rate 240 Hz
  • Display Resolution Maximum 1920 x 1080 pixels
  • Display Type LED
  • Item Dimensions 9.86 x 15.71 x 0.39 inches
  • Item Weight 2.20 lbs

06 Zion Pro

It helps to have vivid colors and lots of pixels on your portable display if you need to use it for video or photo editing. The Zion Pro’s dense 3840 x 2160 resolution for a 15.6-inch monitor and use of AMOLED display technology allowed it to pass our tests while displaying the whole DCI-P3 gamut. Due to the infinite contrast, you get inky blacks and a wide range of hues, but this also means that the rich colors are unsurpassed in this category.

One HDMI 2.0 port and one USB-C port are available for communication. There are two built-in speakers, and 10-point multi-touch is available for individuals who like using their fingers to browse the Windows 10/Windows 11 user interface. When it comes to color performance and features, this portable monitor is unmatched. No display is flawless, though, and the Zion Pro receives some criticism for its OSD regarding icons and the time-consuming adjustments required for accurate calibration.

Furthermore, it would be negligent of us not to note the price, which is a whopping $1000. However, the Zion Pro is difficult to overlook if you’re searching for a stunning display that can rival the color performance and clarity of the greatest built-in laptop displays.

Pros

  • Stunning image with deep contrast
  • Huge color gamut
  • Good motion processing
  • Thin and light
  • 10-point touchscreen

Cons

  • More precise calibration adjustments needed
  • Klunky icon-based menu
  • Needs a longer power cord

Specification

  • Price $959.59
  • Screen Size 31.5 inches
  • Refresh Rate 144 Hz
  • Display Resolution Maximum 3440 x 1440
  • Display Type LED
  • Item Dimensions 9.95 x 28.6 x 22.5 inches
  • Item Weight ‎30.8 pounds
