Chase Amazon Rewards Card to Support Apple Pay
Update [2014-10-24]: Customers are reporting this morning that the Amazon Rewards Card now works with Apple Pay.
Based upon our completely unscientific examination of recent emails and user comments, it appears that many iPhone users also have the Amazon.com Visa card from Chase, which awards spenders with Amazon gift cards. Like us, these users were disappointed this week to find that the Amazon Rewards card did not support Apple Pay, despite the participation of other Chase cards in the program. No official reason was given for the lack of Apple Pay support, leading many to speculate that Amazon — a major Apple rival in eBooks, digital music, tablets, and phones — chose to eschew Apple’s new payment service for competitive reasons, with the company possibly preparing to launch its own mobile payment service in the near future.
Customer feedback on the situation was highly negative, with many longtime Amazon Rewards Card members publicly denouncing Amazon and Chase. Now, Amazon has moved to quell the uproar by stating that the company will support Apple Pay, just not yet.
In a statement provided late Tuesday to GeekWire, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed that the company is working to enable Apple Pay support for the Chase Amazon Rewards card, but declined to say exactly when customers could expect it to happen.
So it looks like iPhone shoppers who want to keep accumulating Amazon points will still need to remember their wallet for a least a little while longer, but it’s good to know that Apple Pay support will eventually come to one of the most popular Chase credit cards.
