02 God Of War

The only reason Spider-Man didn’t win Game of the Year in 2018 was that God of War came out the same year. It’s one of the best that the PS4 has to offer in terms of visuals, gameplay, and story. With a new game coming out soon, it’s time to get into this game first.

God of War puts Kratos in the world of Jotuns and frost giants. After his exploits in Greek Mythology, Kratos set out to live a normal life in a new world but little did he know, his reputation as a god-killer precedes him. Though a single-player experience, you play God of War accompanied by Kratos’ estranged son named Atreus. They travel to various realms to give tribute to Freya – Kratos’ fallen wife and mother of Atreus. Story-wise, God of War paints a more emotional story as compared to previous entries.

For the first time in the series, God of War features a massive world that you can explore gradually. It features diverse landscapes with enough sprawling enemies, challenges, and collectibles to keep you busy for hours. Another first in the series is the introduction of RPG elements which lets you customize the skills and equipment of Kratos and Atreus. This adds more depth to gameplay than fans would’ve imagined.

While it’s the fourth entry in the series, God of War’s story stands on its own. There are a few callbacks to Kratos’ journey in Ancient Greece but overall, you don’t need to have played the previous games to understand the story. However, if you want to appreciate Kratos’ journey even more, you may want to brush up on his adventures from the previous PlayStations. It’s going to be well-worth your time.

03 The Last Of Us: Part II

If you’re a big fan of survival horror, then Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II. It’s the most divisive title on this list, but we can’t deny the fact that it’s worthy of becoming 2020’s Game of the Year.

The Last of Us Part II continues the story of Joel and Ellie in post-apocalyptic America that’s been overrun by the infected. Like in the first entry, the game features an amazing and gritty narrative. Speaking of the first story, you might want to play that first. This is a direct sequel to the first game, and you can benefit a lot from the story if you’re already familiar with the events of the original title. The original title itself is an award-winning game by the developers.

Gameplay-wise, the Last of Us Part II is often seen as the new standard for survival video games. It features great combat mechanics as well as survival elements that will keep you on your toes all the time. The explorable areas are now much bigger, and you can be a lot more creative with how you dispose of your enemies as compared to the first game. Everything from the first game is upgraded in the sequel.

Bear in mind that The Last of Us Part II is a very divisive game. Fans of the series are split as to whether or not it’s a great title overall. While the game does have is good sides, there are others that say that the story is a slap in the face of hardcore fans. Ultimately, it will be up to you to decide how this game fares. In our opinion, The Last of Us Part II is a masterpiece that’s well deserving of its title and it’s truly one of the best single-player experiences on the PS4.

The first game will get a remake that will release on the PS5 this September. It would be a good idea to wait for that game first before trying out this title.

04 Ghost of Tsushima

Despite being the height of the pandemic, 2020 was an excellent year for gaming. Aside from The Last of Us Part II, another excellent title that made 2020 a good year for gaming was Ghost of Tsushima.

Ghost of Tsushima follows Jin Sakai as he defends his land from an incoming Monggol invasion spearheaded by the ruthless Khotun Khan. Being the battle-tested samurai that he is, Jin Sakai now has to face the enemy who seems to use unconventional methods against them. Throughout the game, Jin faces an inner conflict that sees him choosing between the honorable and noble ways of the samurai and the ruthless but effective ways of being a Ghost.

The game features a vast open-world that Jin is free to explore. The game doesn’t use mini-maps or waypoints. Instead, you’ll have to be more creative when it comes to getting from point A to point B. One of the draw points of Ghost of Tsushima is its excellent combat system which sees Jin changing his battle stance on the fly to combat specific enemies. The game itself serves as an excellent fan service to old samurai films made popular by legendary filmmaker Akira Kurosawa.

Ghost of Tsushima is critically acclaimed for good reason. An excellent story, an excellent combat system, and an engaging multiplayer mode that’s free to anyone. You can easily sink up over 50 hours on Ghost of Tsushima and you’ll see why it’s such a beloved title. If you’re a fan of photo modes, you should be excited for Ghost of Tsushima’s as it’s photo mode is revered as one of the best ones there is right now.

05 Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

FromSoftware is well-known for creating some hardcore games. Aside from the Dark Souls games, Bloodborne, and the more recent Elden Ring, another title that’s great for those that love a challenge is Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is a spiritual successor of the Tenchu series. In this game, you take the role of Wolf, a dedicated shinobi that’s trying to uncover a secret in feudal Japan. The game puts you up against a wide variety of enemies including demons, samurai, other ninja, and a lot more. It’s the Game of the Year winner in 2019 and despite being a hardcore title, a lot of fans enjoyed the game and it’s great challenges.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice features two major gameplay elements: stealth and combat. As a shinobi, you can use your surroundings to your advantage and kill enemies instantly. You also gain access to a wide selection of ninja tools that can aid in your escape or even in battle. The stealth elements of the game are the best we’ve seen in any game which is why it’s such a good successor to the Tenchu series.

Now for the combat. The combat of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice feels very smooth. The game relies a lot on timing and parrying as opposed to blocking attacks. If you parry your opponent’s consecutively, you can break their stance and initiate an instant kill. Of course, enemies can also break your stance and deal major damage to the Wolf as well. It’s a challenging high risk and high reward system that’s very easy to understand but very hard to master.

Due to its immense difficulty, it’s safe to say that Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice isn’t for everyone. If you’re up for a challenge however, the game is a good one all-in-all.

Pros

  • Great combat and stealth elements
  • Lengthy gameplay

Cons

  • Hardcore difficulty isn't for everyone

Specification

  • Price $47.99
  • Rated Mature
  • Release Year 2019

06 Horizon Zero Dawn

Don’t get us wrong, there are many other great titles on the PS4, but we’d like to end this list with Horizon Zero Dawn for the PS4. It may have been a new IP when it launched, but the game was loved regardless.

Horizon Zero Dawn follows the story of Aloy. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world where machines roam the land. Aloy explores the world to uncover the mystery behind a cult and the growing aggression of the monsters that surround them. It’s an excellent setting, and the game features a good twist that you should definitely look for. Story-wise, Horizon Zero Dawn doesn’t disappoint, albeit having a simple and straightforward narrative.

As Aloy, you get to explore a rich open world that’s teeming with relics of the past, as well as machines. You can take down foes by many means, such as setting up traps to lure them out or even taking them on directly. The combat elements of the game are what make it extra special, as Aloy gets to use her selection of bows that can be equipped with various ammo. The machines are challenging, and they force players to think outside the box during every encounter.

Horizon Zero Dawn has a sequel titled Horizon Forbidden West. The game is also available on the PS4. If you want to get your hands on this excellent title, you should first play the first game which is a great game in itself.

Pros

  • Expansive open world rich with content
  • Great combat and gameplay elements
  • Amazing story

Cons

  • Game can be difficult at times
