Amazon Streaming Device To Be Unveiled Next Wednesday

Amazon is gearing up to unveil its rumored living room solution next week, with the company sending out press invitations for an “update on our video business” scheduled for next Wednesday, April 2.

With a host of existing video content and a large user base, sources have long claimed that Amazon was developing its own video streaming hardware solution in the form of a set-top box. Recently, new rumors indicate that the company’s initiative may take the form of a Google Chromecast-like HDMI dongle.

The Amazon streaming device, powered by a custom version of Android, is expected to support popular third party services such as Netflix in addition to the company’s own video library. An app-like interface, similar to Roku, is also likely.

Earlier reports also leaked images of a purported Amazon Bluetooth game controller, indicating that the new device may also support Android games. Amazon already offers a mobile gaming hub service called GameCircle, so bringing games to its TV device could make sense for the company.

There’s no word yet on pricing, although multiple sources predict April availability following the company’s press event next week. With competing streaming devices from Apple, Google, and Roku all under $100, expect Amazon to price its device similarly.

The Amazon Video Business Event kicks off Wednesday, April 2 at 11:00 a.m. EDT.
