How to Delete Google Home Recordings

Google Home can record both audio and video activities on your computer, mobile device, Nest Hub, and other devices. This can be a bit unnerving for users who are very protective of their privacy.

Luckily, you can delete recordings so that no one can get to them ever. But, since this feature is enabled by default, you should probably know how to delete the recordings individually, all at once, and from any type of device through which you access your account.

Activity Filtering

There are three ways to filter out Google Home recordings saved to your Google Account. The first one is filtering by products. This means filtering results by the apps used to record said activities, such as Chrome, Google Assistant, etc.

filter by date

You can also filter by specific dates, as shown in the image above, or by date ranges. The last option is a combination of the first two.

Consider this a refined filter which uses both product searches and date searches to narrow down saved recordings so that you don’t have to scroll through an exhaustive list of entries.

How to Delete Individual Recordings

If you have one or two recordings you would like erased, you can filter them by date and delete them individually, while other important recordings remain intact. Here’s how you can do this:

  1. Log into your Google Account.
  2. Select the Data & personalization option from the navigation panel.
  3. Go to the Activity Controls panel.
  4. Select the Web & App activity option.
  5. Go to Manage Activity.
  6. Look for activities with a Microphone icon next to them.
  7. Select which one you want to delete.
  8. Select the More option next to the activity.
  9. Select Delete from the new menu.

How to Delete All Recordings

If you’re unsure which recordings shouldn’t be heard by anyone else, you could always save time by deleting all recordings and activities at the same time.

  1. Log into your Google Account.
  2. Select the Data & personalization option from the navigation panel.
  3. Go to the Activity Controls panel.
  4. Select the Web & App activity option.
  5. Go to Manage Activity.
  6. Click on the More icon.
  7. Select the Delete activity by option.
  8. Click the Down arrow located under the Delete by date option.
  9. Select the All Time option.
  10. Click on the Delete button to confirm.

How to Turn Off Recordings

If you’re not a fan of having your activity recorded in your Google Account history, you can always turn this feature off. That way you wouldn’t have to worry about anyone accessing potentially compromising recordings.

  1. Log into your Google Account.
  2. Select the Data & personalization option from the navigation panel.
  3. Go to the Activity Controls panel.
  4. Select the Web & App activity option.
  5. Uncheck the box next to the following option “Include voice and audio recordings.”

This will turn both audio and video recordings off, whether you’re signed into your account or not at the time. However, note that you can’t turn them on and off separately.

You should also know that even with all the lack of privacy scare going around, not all apps support Google Home audio recordings.

How to Delete Recordings from Your Mobile Device

If you don’t have access to a computer, there’s no need to worry. Audio and video recordings can also be deleted from mobile devices.

However, you don’t get as much freedom in terms of filtering those recordings by date and product. But the good news is that the website is mobile friendly.

  1. Launch your browser on your mobile device.
  2. Log into your Google Account.
  3. Go to the myactivity.google.com website.
  4. Tap the Filter by date & product option.
  5. Uncheck all the products.
  6. Scroll down until you reach the Voice & Audio section.
  7. Tap the Voice & Audio option.
  8. Tap on the blue magnifying glass button to initiate a search.
  9. Start deleting individual recordings.

Note that this will allow you to delete entire months of recordings if you wish.

How to Delete Voice History Faster

There’s also a quicker way to delete voice history from a mobile device.

  1. Launch your favorite internet browser.
  2. Go to the myactivity.google.com website.
  3. Tap on the Settings icon in the upper right corner of the screen.
  4. Select the Delete activity by option.
  5. Choose a specific date or date range to filter activities.
  6. From the drop down menu, tap on the Voice & Audio option.
  7. Tap Delete and then OK to confirm.

Should You Keep Audio Recordings On?

Unless you really want to revisit certain commands and discussions, there’s little to no reason to have your activities recorded by Google Home. Having more recordings doesn’t help improve the accuracy of the voice recognition software, and there’s also no way to order the assistant to use the command from an old recording, in order for you to use less words.

However, recordings may help the developers improve upon the app later on. If you’d like to help, it might be worth sacrificing a little privacy. Do you keep Google Home recordings on or off? Let us know in the comments section below.
