Edit MSI Files With InstEd

When installing some applications, their setup files are distributed in MSI format which is simply an alternate form of a “setup.exe” file. Just like Exe files can be edited by by tools such as Resource Hacker, MSI files can be edited with the InstEd tool.

Among other things, this free tool allows you to do the following:

• View virtually all properties of an MSI file.
• Map GUID file names to actual installed file names.
• Edit imbedded images.

Granted, this tool is really designed for developers or system admins, it does give you good insight into how MSI files work.
