Ring Floodlight Cam Review

What’s left to say about Ring that hasn’t been said? – If the company’s popularity is any indication, the people have spoken. The Ring doorbell is the crowd favorite solution for integrated video doorbells. Therefore, it’s not a shocker that an integrated video camera outdoor light from Ring is also gaining plenty of traction.

Though not the first to come up with this product idea, Ring has proven time and again that it knows what people want. And, because of that, Ring offers plenty of variety in terms of features, subscription plans, as well as a well-balanced product even in its most basic form.

Subscription Plans

Before getting into the details, here’s an interesting fact. Neither subscription plan is mandatory. The company doesn’t force you to subscribe if you purchase the Ring floodlight cam. However, without one you will be limited to just real-time viewing. However, you aren’t deprived of alerts.

The basic subscription plan – Ring Protect Basic – costs a monitoring and storage fee per camera. You will get a discount off the monthly rate if you pay for a full year upfront.

The second subscription plan – Ring Protect Plus – is about three times more expensive than the basic. However, this is when things get interesting. If you want massive camera coverage, this is the way to get it. The Ring Protect Plus plan lets you have as many cameras as you want while only charging you a fixed fee.

As an added bonus, you also get a better warranty coverage as well as a warranty extension.

Installation

What can be easier than using the Floodlight Cam as a replacement for a regular outdoor floodlight? – Not much. Although the system is not as sleek as what some of the competitors came up with, its beginner-friendly video tutorials are. You don’t need any technical knowledge or skills to use the Ring Floodlight Cams and secure your entire yard.

Features

Ring’s Floodlight Cam comes with two LED floodlights. These are positioned on articulated arms which can move independently. The combined brightness is 3000 lumens which is nothing to sneeze at. In addition, the Floodlight Cam has superior light focus thanks to the cone-shaped shades.

The camera has a 140-degree FOV (field of view). The view may be a bit narrower than that of other cameras, but it does capture video in 1080p (for users with subscriptions). Also built-in are a motion sensor, microphone, and speaker. This means two-way conversations are possible.

Performance and Durability

If you don’t want recordings and a longer warranty, keep in mind that the Floodlight Cam has virtually no dust protection. It is rated IPX5, which means it can handle itself in the rain, but dust could be its downfall. Regular maintenance is required.

The motion sensor covers a radius of 270 degrees. While you can’t adjust the brightness of the LEDs, you can adjust the sensitivity of the motion sensor. This allows you to customize it so that it only detects humans and not smaller animals or things.

The app also allows you to schedule the motion sensor to work at specific intervals. It also lets you create specific detection patterns if you want to keep tabs only in certain parts of your yard.

Seeing as this is a Wi-Fi camera, you will need a strong connection. The device only works on 2.4GHz networks, which may leave plenty of room for interference. It also means that you can’t mount the camera too far away from the router.

A Final Thought

If you’re a proud owner of other Ring products, the Floodlight Cam would be a great fit. Apart from its susceptibility to dust, the camera is very durable and easy to mount. While the Wi-Fi connection isn’t the best, it’s nothing that an extra router can’t handle.

Besides, the number of cameras you can put on the exterior of your house or in your yard is unlimited. The level of customization is also impressive as far as motion sensor patterns and alerts go. The brightness is good and the focus light is tight, as opposed to the flat beams that are characteristic of other cameras in this category.

This should give you better visibility overall, especially if you use more than one camera. However, what’s perhaps even more appealing than anything else is that you can use however many cameras without having to subscribe, if you’re willing to live with real-time viewing only.

Is it the best on the market? – For some, obviously yes. At the end of the day, it’s a matter of personal opinion and needs, but there’s no denying that the Ring Floodlight Cam has great potential.
