Steve Jobs to be Honored With Commemorative Postage Stamp in 2015

The United States Postal Service this week approved a new series of collectible stamps slated to roll out over the next two to three years. The collection will feature popular culture icons from a number of different eras and genres, including Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, the Peanuts characters, Harvey Milk, Wilt Chamberlin, Johnny Carson… and Steve Jobs.

The late Apple co-founder and visionary CEO will be posthumously honored with a commemorative stamp set for release in 2015. Mr. Jobs passed away in October 2011 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer and its complications. In addition to restoring Apple to its past glory, Mr. Jobs made his mark in entertainment by cultivating the hugely successful Pixar Animation Studios, which was purchased by Disney in 2006, a deal which made Mr. Jobs Disney’s largest shareholder.

Stamp collectors have already noted that Mr. Jobs’s stamp is a bit unusual. Although not mandated by law, a longstanding policy at the U.S. Postal Service imposed a 10-year waiting period before deceased individuals were eligible for a commemorative stamp. While some dedicated stamp collectors may bristle at the change, Apple fans will likely smile at the idea that Mr. Jobs’s inclusion in the series is yet another reminder of how little regard the CEO had for the rules.

The Steve Jobs stamp design is still in development. The full list of upcoming stamp designs can be viewed on Scribd.
