Apple iPhone X: How To Clear Cache

One of the joys of getting a new smartphone is the speed and responsiveness of a new device. But with time, all phones slow down. If you’re noticing a bit of lag on your iPhone X or iPad, this article will help!
The apps you use on your phone all store data. Some only store a little, but others can be major memory hogs. We’ll show you how you can free up space on your phone by deleting unnecessary files, which will speed up the overall performance of your iPhone.
Most devices require some regular maintenance. Don’t worry, these steps don’t need to be performed too often.

How to Delete Safari Cache in iOS 11 (iPhone & iPad)

If you use Safari as your primary browser, it’s likely that the native iOS app is taking up a lot more space than necessary. Note that by wiping the cache of Safari, you’ll be logged out of all websites.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Scroll Down and Select Safari (between Compass & News)
  3. Then scroll Down and Select Clear History and Website Data (a blue link)
  4. Scroll Down and Select Clear History and Website Data (a blue link)
  5. Select Clear History and Data

How to Offload Unused Apps on iOS 11 (iPhone & iPad)

Apps take up space, and most of us have apps that we don’t use too often but take up a lot of space. These instructions show you how to identify larger apps that you can afford to delete temporarily, but at the same time saving all documents and data associated with the app. This is called Offloading apps. It’s a great way to save space on your phone.
What’s interesting is that when you reinstall the app, it’s often much smaller than it was originally. A clean reinstallation for some of your larger apps can free up a lot of space, potentially.

  1. Open Settings
  2. Scroll Down and Select General
  3. Select iPhone Storage
  4. Scroll Down to the List of Apps – these are ordered by how much space they’re taking up. It’s likely to see things like Photos, Messages, Media Players (like Spotify), Podcast Players, and other apps that contain larger files.
  5. Identify an App that Take a Lot of Space but You Don’t Use too Often – anything more than 100 MB is worth taking a look at
  6. Select the App
  7. Select Offload App (or simply delete if you’re not planning on reinstalling)

When you’re ready to use the app again, simply install it from the App Store and all of the app’s documents and data will be back!

Saving Space on iPhone X Recommendations

A handy feature on iOS 11 and iPhone X is that your device will automatically recommend ways to save space with regards to your apps.

Offload Unused Apps

Enabling this feature means your phone will automatically offload unused apps when you’re low on storage. Documents and data is saved. So if you’re worried about space on your iPhone, this is a great option. The recommendation lets you know how much space you’ll save.

Auto Delete Old Conversations on Messages

This feature will automatically remove text messages that have gone dormant for over one year, including media attachments, which we all know takes up tons of space. Again, the recommendation lets you know how much space you’ll free up by enabling it. This will probably get you into the habit of saving photos and videos sent to you via Messages that you definitely want to keep on your phone forever.

Review Large Attachments

This is a way to manually decide which attachments you’d like to purge from your phone. When you click on this, you’ll see a list of all media file attachments on your phone, ordered by how large they are. Take a look at some of the ones at the top and swipe left to delete if you don’t need it anymore.

Restart iPhone to Increase Free Memory

iOS 11 is actually pretty good at managing the memory on your device. Thing is, some of that functionality only runs when your iPhone or iPad are shut down and turned back on. Bet your phone has been on for a while now! Here’s how to restart it.

  1. Hold the Sleep/Wake Button (on the top right of your iPhone, at the top of your iPad)
  2. Swipe the Slider to Power Off
  3. The Device will Power Down
  4. Press and Hold the Sleep/Wake Button to Turn Back On

How to Clear the App Cache on the Apple iPhone X

And finally we come to clearing cache that takes up space in your iCloud account. This is a little different than the instructions above – this isn’t about saving space on your physical device, it’s about saving space in your iCloud account.
If your iCloud account is totally full (and you can’t download new apps because of it!), this is what you need to do…

      1. Open Settings
      2. Click on Your Name at the Top
      3. Choose iCloud
      4. Select Manage Storage
      5. Choose an App that is taking up a lot of space in iCloud
      6. You have a couple options here – you can select Delete Documents and Data, which will remove all app data from iCloud pertaining to that app. It can’t be undone. If this confuses you, you just need to make the best decision you can. Is the app very important to you? Don’t delete documents and data. Never use it, really? Go for it!
      7. At the bottom, there may be a section called Documents & Data. If there are some files in this section, they can be independently deleted  – beneath this is a list of files – swipe left to delete the files
      8. Confirm the Delete

Only clear the data if it’s okay that you lose all information related to the app, including your username, passwords, game progress, preferences, settings, files, etc.

Is Your Phone Still Laggy, Slow?

Clearing up space on your phone won’t fix everything. Sometimes a phone’s just getting old and slow. Other times there could be a more serious issue to deal with. If you complete the above steps and are still experiencing trouble, you’ll want to make an appointment at the Genius Bar at the closest Apple Store. Make sure you back up your phone before you visit!
