Using VLC With Chromecast

Using VLC With Chromecast

While there’s no out of the box compatibility between Chromecast and VLC, the two can be used together. You’ll need to take a few steps before casting VLC to your Chromecast.  There are easy enough so, keep reading and we’ll show you the way.

If you don’t already have VLC installed on your computer then, head to the VLC website and download the version compatible with your computer.

When the download completes, install the VLC media player to your device.  Download VLC

Get the Chrome Browser

Next, you’ll need the Google Chrome browser.  Install it to your computer if you don’t already have it installed.  Make sure you’ve got the Chromecast extension installed with the Chrome Browser.                         Get Google Chrome Browser

Newer versions of Chrome browser come with it pre-installed.  The cast extension is on the upper right-hand side at the top of your Chrome browser.                                                                                                        Chromecast extension

Open VLC Media Player

The next step is to open the VLC Media Player on your computer.  Then, choose the file you’d like to watch.

Pause your video if it starts playing automatically.

Now go back to your Chrome browser and click the casting tab.  This uses your Chromecast so you can watch your VLC video.

  • Click the drop-down arrow and select cast desktop.                                                     Cast desktop
  • Next, select your Chromecast device in the list.
  • You’ll see a pop-up saying Chrome would like to share your screen contents. To allow it just click the share button in the lower right.                                                                                                                             Share Desktop Chromecast
  • Next go back to your VLC media player and start your chosen video. Click the play button and make your video full screen size.  VLC play full screen

That’s it.  You’re now watching your VLC media with your Google Chromecast device through the Chrome browser on your computer.  Enjoy.

Conclusion

You can watch your VLC media files with your Google Chromecast device.  It can’t get done directly with an application as it’s not yet natively supported.  Though, you can use the Google Chrome browser with the Chromecast extension and cast your entire desktop.

As long as you have VLC installed on your computer and your media is ready to watch you can cast to your Google Chromecast.  Enable your Chromecast extension on the browser and you’re ready to roll.

This solution is laggy as hell. You can’t watch movies this way without being a masochist.

The article is out of date. The latest (beta) versions of VLC provide Chromecast support – it isn’t perfect yet, but it works usually.

I don’t have the option to choose between casting desktop and tab (everything up to date) – not sure there’s any point without audio though….. any other ways round this yet please?

How to enable audio? I tried several times already but every time I cast VLC via Google Chrome on Mac it does not have audio.
