What Movies Will Be Available on Disney Plus?

Streaming services have been around for more than a decade, but it wasn’t until 2013 when Netflix premiered House of Cards that streaming originals began to explode in popularity. Since then, we’ve seen streaming exclusives from every direction, including streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, tech companies like Amazon and Apple, and classic media companies like CBS and WarnerMedia. Now, two years after publicly announcing their intention to enter the streaming market, Disney is ready to launch Disney Plus on November 12th, and we couldn’t be more excited. With original shows set in the universes of Marvel and Star Wars on their way, plus access to a huge multi-brand archive, Disney Plus is looking to become one of the best streaming services yet.

Of course, Disney isn’t limiting their original content to just TV shows. Like Netflix and Amazon Prime, Disney is working to push many of their films to Disney Plus as exclusives, while also offering their backlog of films from throughout the last 100 years. Read on to find out what movies—both original and legacy—will be streaming on Disney Plus after launch.

Original Films

Although Disney is using their streaming service as a way to bolster their original TV programming, they’re also working hard to make sure their film output succeeds online as well as their theatrical releases have. Disney is putting a lot of cash behind their original streaming films, and here’s what you can look forward to throughout 2019 and beyond.

At launch, Disney has two films ready to stream. The first is familiar: if you’ve been a fan of Disney’s live-action reimaginings of their classic animated films, you’ll be happy to know that, starting November 12th, you can stream Lady and the Tramp. A remake of the 1955 animated classic, the film tells the story of a cocker spaniel named Lady (voiced by Tessa Thompsin), who embarks on romantic adventures with the Tramp (voiced by Justin Theroux), a schnauzer stray who lives on his own, free of any humans or households. You can check out the trailer for Lady and the Tramp here.

Also arriving on November 12th, Noelle is an original Christmas film following the adventures of the titular character, Noelle Kringle. As the daughter of Santa Claus himself, Kris Kringle, Noelle helps to prepare her brother Nick to take over the reigns from their dad as Santa. When Noelle (Anna Kendrick) suggests Nick (Bill Hader) take off a weekend to help himself destress, he disappears from the North Pole entirely, leaving Christmas in danger without a Santa. While cousin Gabriel (Billy Eichner) works to turn Santa’s workshop into an online delivery service, Noelle travels to find Nick and bring him back to the North Pole. Check out the trailer here.

While those are the only two original films you’ll find streaming on Disney Plus come November 12th, you won’t have to wait long to watch more. Togo is scheduled to arrive sometime in December, telling the true story of two figures who work to get antitoxin serums through harsh conditions in order to save an Alaskan town from an epidemic. Willem Dafoe stars, and we can’t wait to see one of our favorite actors take on a powerful drama.

Finally, Disney has a number of other films announced to premiere sometime in 2020, including:

  • Stargirl
  • Timmy Failure: Mistakes Were Made
  • Magic Camp
  • Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe
  • Flora and Ulysses
  • Safety

Following their August 2019 call with investors, Disney announced a number of projects planned for the future, including a number of films based on existing 20th Century Fox properties that were picked up when Disney purchased the studio. These films haven’t begun production yet, but are in some stage and development and will arrive on Disney Plus rather than being released theatrically.

Disney Channel Original Movies

In addition to the above films, every single Disney Channel movie up to and including this year’s Kim Possible should be streaming at launch or soon after, including the entire High School Musical franchise, all three Cheetah Girls films, and fan-favorites like HalloweentownZenonTwitches, The Luck of the Irish, The 13th Year, and Cadet Kelly.

Marvel Films

The Marvel Cinematic Universe helps to make up one of Disney’s biggest branches of their streaming service, with eight shows planned over the next several years.

  • Ant-Man
  • The Avengers
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • Captain Marvel
  • Doctor Strange
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
  • Iron Man
  • Iron Man 2
  • Iron Man 3
  • Thor
  • Thor: The Dark World

Four Marvel films are still held by Netflix: Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, and Thor: Ragnarok. All four films should return to Disney Plus in 2020, soon after their streaming rights on Netflix expire.

Meanwhile, the Spider-Man movies are an outlier for Disney. Though they’re directly connected to the MCU, both Spider-Man: Homecoming and Spider-Man: Far From Home are produced by Sony, not Disney. Therefore, it’s up to Sony to distribute them, not Disney and Marvel Studios.

This could change, of course. The two companies are on somewhat-steady terms, with the future of Spider-Man in the MCU settled for at least another film. Sony does own Crackle though, and if they ever decide to create a more premium streaming service, they may want to hold onto their most recent Spider-Man films in order to give themselves a bit of a boost.

There’s one other film missing from the list above: The Incredible Hulk. Like Spider-ManThe Incredible Hulk is owned by Paramount and not Disney. That said, it’s hard to imagine anyone being upset over The Incredible Hulk missing from Disney Plus. Not only are the events of the film hardly ever mentioned throughout the MCU, but the original actor for the Hulk, Edward Norton, was replaced by Mark Ruffalo in 2012’s The Avengers.

Star Wars

Unlike Marvel, Star Wars fans have a lot to look forward to when Disney Plus launches on November 12th. In addition to launching The Mandalorian, the first-ever live-action Star Wars television show, Disney will also be able to offer subscribers access to all three films from the original trilogy, all three films from the prequel trilogy, plus The Force Awakens and Rogue One. That leaves only Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Solo: A Star Wars Story as the two films not streaming on Disney Plus, likely due to their licensing agreement with Netflix, where both films are currently available.

That said, there’s actually a chance Disney Plus launches with the two films its missing as well. Currently available in a beta soft launch in the Netherlands, Disney Plus’ lineup currently offers all ten films, though it’s unclear at this time whether that will extend to other regions, including the United States.

Still, if you’re a Star Wars fan who doesn’t own the entire collection on Blu-ray, Disney Plus is a non-brainer.

20th Century Fox Films

By now, you’re likely aware that Disney completed their purchase of Fox’s film production company in 2019. While there will be some legacy material from Fox streaming on Disney Plus during the first year of its launch, new Fox releases won’t be available on Disney Plus until sometime during or after 2022, when the company’s distribution deal with HBO ends.

Don’t be dismayed though, since Disney Plus will stay be host to dozens of classic Fox films, including Avatar, 500 Days of Summer and Miracle on 34th Street. There’s good reason to believe that a lot of 20th Century Fox’s extended filmography, once it’s back in the hands of Disney, may stream on Hulu instead, as Disney hopes to keep Disney Plus relatively family-friendly. Still, we’ll have to wait and see exactly how it goes.

There’s a lot of films on this list, and even more coming when Disney Plus officially launches on November 12th, but this should give you a good idea of what to expect when signing up.
