Given the success of movies based on Marvel comic book characters, it was only a matter of time before filmmakers began to dabble with the Archie comic book series. After all, Jughead, Veronica and Archie have been household names for decades. When Netflix announced that it was going to produce a series based on Archie characters, there was palpable buzz among comic book fans.
The first series was Riverdale, which airs on the CW in North America and on Netflix worldwide, a slick drama about teenage characters coming to terms with strange events in their titular town. Netflix then teased a series based on Sabrina Spellman as a companion piece to Riverdale. But the streaming giant shelved those plans and approved a straight-to-series order for Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
Has Sabrina Been Successful?
The supernatural horror series has been widely successful. While Riverdale definitely set a benchmark for the Archie franchise, Sabrina has taken it to another level. Fun and scary in equal measure, we’re not sure anybody could have done a better job of portraying the dynamic half-mortal, half-witch Sabrina than Kiernan Shipka. Years ago, she burst onto the scene in Mad Men, but with Sabrina, Shipka has displayed a range of performance rarely found in actors so young.
What About Season 4?
With Netflix approving the third and fourth parts of the series together, Sabrina fans can rest assured that their adventure with Sabrina is far from over. In fact, at the time of writing, the filming of the fourth part of the series is underway in Vancouver, British Columbia.
People familiar with the trajectory of the story might already be able to guess what the fourth season of Sabrina has in store for its fans. A number of theories appear to be floating around, but the only fact we can be certain of right now is that Sabrina will continue her sojourn in Hell!
There’s no official release date for the next season yet. But the second season of the series was released six months after the initial season first appeared on Netflix. Considering that Netflix dropped the third part in January of this year, we can guess that the fourth season should drop between July-August, 2020.
Number of Episodes
Each of the previous three parts of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina included eight episodes. We can safely assume that the fourth part will continue the tradition this time around.
Who Is Starring?
All the usual suspects. Kiernan Shipka will certainly reprise her role of Sabrina, while her family members Aunt Zelda, Aunt Hilda and cousin Ambrose will also return with Miranda Otto, Lucy Davis and Chance Perdomo playing them respectively.
Sabrina’s school friends have also been spotted in Vancouver, so we can assume that Ross Lunch (Harvey Kinkle), Jaz Sinclair (Rosalind Walker) and Lachlan Watson (Theo Putnam) will also return.
What Can We Expect in Season 4?
Before we share what’s to be expected from the fourth season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, here’s a warning. Some of what is to follow in this write-up may contain spoilers. Therefore, if you still haven’t watched the third season of the show, we’d recommend you read no further.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the creator of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, recently opened up about Season 4 with The Wrap. He insists that the fourth season will be different in flavor from the third season and that we can expect really exciting things going forward!
According to Sacasa, each episode of the fourth season will be a mini horror movie on its own.
“Each part has its own kind of identity, and Part 4 is different from Part 3, where a lot of it was set in Hell, we still have that. But each episode of Part 4 is like its own mini horror movie, which is exciting,” he said.
For those of you who aren’t aware, a time-paradox in Part 3 meant that there were two simultaneous Sabrinas in the story. While one Sabrina ruled Hell, the other one was still spending time with her family in Greendale. Sacasa reminds us that the arc of the two Sabrinas will continue in the next part.
Even more exciting was Sacasa’s admission that there will be H.P. Lovecraft vibes in the next season of the show. We don’t exactly know what that will entail, but considering Lovecraft is revered for his horror fiction and the creation of an entire mythos, we can only wait in anticipation. To sum up, Sacasa said that fans of the show should expect the demonic version of The Crown, a show about British monarchy full of palace intrigue and power struggles.
We Can’t Wait. Can You?
Expect the fourth season (or part) of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina to be out no later than August of this year. In the meantime, if you’re still missing Sabrina and her gang, why not dive into the first three seasons again!
