How To Install Showbox on the iPhone
Showbox is a great media streaming app that functions a little like Netflix, but the content is delivered from independently operated systems around the world. If you recall the days of Napster file sharing, Showbox is a similar idea. And yes, like Napster, it’s legally dubious. In fact, it’s somewhat difficult to ascertain who even makes the software. The developers have no official website, and it’s not available for download on the Apple Store (or the Google Play store for Android). But if you’re feeling adventurous and want to give it a try, we’ll walk you through how to install the software on your iPhone.
The iOS-compatible version of Showbox works on both iPhone and iPad. As iOS is a closed system, it isn’t quite as easy getting it to work as it is on Android, but with a little perseverance, you’ll get there. The good news is that it will work on non-jailbroken iPhones.
The slightly confusing news is that depending on where you go, the iOS version will be called either Showbox or Movie Box. Movie Box is the iOS version of the same app but seeing as most people know Showbox over Movie Box, I will continue to use both.
Showbox and you
Because the legality of Showbox is highly questionable, care should be taken when using it. It has not been chased down by Hollywood—yet. But there is a precedent of powerful copyright holders aggressively pursuing people who have downloaded their intellectual property, including a woman from Minnesota who was fined $220,000 for downloading pirated MP3s. So one should be careful.
It makes sense to only use it while using a VPN in case streams are being watched. If you are planning to use Showbox on your iPhone, I would definitely invest in a quality VPN too if you don’t already have one. Not only will a VPN protect you while streaming content on Showbox, it will also protect you when using open WiFi networks, and allow you to use the internet safely anywhere in the country.
Installing Showbox on iPhone
Given the dubious legal nature of Showbox, the app isn’t available in iTunes. Instead you have to use a downloader and install it another way. You will need a Windows PC and be able to connect your iPhone to it via USB. It does not work on Mac for some reason.
- Download and install the vShare PC client onto your PC.
- Connect your iPhone to your PC and open vShare.
- Allow the vShare app to install onto your iPhone.
- Open vShare on your iPhone and look for the Movie Box app.
- Navigate to Settings, General, Profile & Device Management.
- Select Trust the developer.
- Open Movie Box and browse for content.
- Tap content to stream.
The process is a little convoluted, and having to install vShare onto your PC and your iPhone is a bit of a pain. Once done however, things even out and you get to use Movie Box. Just be aware that every time you update iOS, you may overwrite Movie Box settings. If the app stops working, simply go back to vShare and download a fresh copy of the app and repeat steps 3–8.
If you tried Movie Box and didn’t like it, there are a few alternatives you might prefer.
PlayBox HD is a lot like Movie Box. The look and feel is almost identical. It does not offer access to as much HD or UHD content as Movie Box, but it has lots and lots of media at 720p. It’s ad supported, but the ads stay mainly at the bottom of the screen, out of the way.
Cinema Box is made by the same people behind PlayBox HD. It looks and feels very similar too. The benefit here is that this app supports Apple TV, so you can use AirPlay to view media on your TV. Other than that, it’s very similar.
Terrarium has an iOS version and is one of the most accomplished media streaming apps out there right now. It offers a similar service as Movie Box and uses vShare to install. Once done, you can browse movies, TV shows and other media on your device and stream right to it.
Showbox/Movie Box is a slick streaming app. Admittedly, it works best on Android, but the iPhone version is fully functional. As long as you don’t mind installing third-party software to get to it, you can use it without jailbreaking. If for some reason you don’t like Showbox/Movie Box, the other three streaming apps I listed do much the same thing in slightly different ways.
