“Secret” Ultra-Low-Cost Verizon Wireless Plans

Today I called Verizon to find out what my cancellation fee would be (I was thinking of switching carriers) and was told it would be $155 if I canceled.

Ouch.

The sales representative then asked me why I wanted to cancel. I told him cost was a concern and I didn’t feel I was getting my money’s worth.

Then I found out there not one but three ultra-low-cost post-paid plans available. These are listed nowhere on the Verizon Wireless web site (and if they are, please post a link because I couldn’t find them.)

These are absolute basic no-frills plans with next to nothing in them, just so you’re aware. And bear in mind that yes, these are post-paid plans, not pre-paid (more on that in a moment.)

$34.99 a month

  • 300 anytime minutes.
  • Unlimited nights and weekends
  • Free long distance in the continental US

$25.00 a month

  • 100 anytime minutes
  • 500 night and weekend minutes

$20.00 a month

  • 50 anytime minutes
  • 100 night and weekend minutes

A post-paid plan for $20 a month? Believe it. Verizon has it. Granted, it’s not even an hour’s worth of talk-time per month, but the fact of the matter is that YES, you can go that cheap on a post-paid plan. If you’re the type that only uses a cell phone for calling AAA and emergencies, this is perfect for you.

But you have to ask for it.

I was only informed of these plans due to the fact I mentioned cost was a concern.

A few notes on pre-paid plans

A PCMech reader once noted that the best way to go cheap with a cell phone is to go T-Mobile and buy a 1000-minute card that’s good for 1 year. And he was right.

It is in fact the absolute lowest you can go price-wise for a cell phone. Assuming you don’t go over the 1000 minutes in the year, you get a little over 75 minutes a month. The cost translates to under 8 bucks a month (not including the price of the phone itself or overages if any.)

I pay $104 per month including taxes for unlimited talk, text and data on Verizon Wireless. Does any Verizon customer pay less and if yes, how much do you pay?

H2O is $10 for 200 minuets and good for 90 days. So just $40 a year.

Verizon also owns PagePlus Cellular that markets through independet dealers. Their lowest monthly prepaid plan offers 1200 anywhere/anytime minutes, 1200 text messages and 50 MB of data for $29.95. Customer services is not as good as Verizon’s but the price is right.

Everyone would definitely stick to Verizon if they promote this plan!!However, Is there anyone who recently checked this plan still exists??I just recently cancelled my Verizon, and was trying to slip to metroPCS $40 unlimited talk, text, web plan, but if this plan is still alive I'll stay for Verizon..

I have the $15.00 dollar a month with Verzion. I've had this plan for 10 years now, and when I was going to cancel it, I was informed it would never be available again. So I kept it. An ok plan, as long as your not a high volume cell phone user.

I got a notice in the mail. I don’t use my phone much since I have a home phone. They told me they have reviewed my usage and that I am eligible for a $25 monthly plan with 100 anytime minutes, 500 night and weekend minutes. No contract required.

Funny. I think I am getting this notice since my 2-yr contract is ending in 1 month and I had told the customer service guy I might switch to t-mobile or att since all my family here and overseas is on GSM. Now all of a sudden there is a $25 plan.

Must be the economy, I have never received a notice from a company asking me to reduce what I pay them!

Can I make calls from Canada to the US? When I’m on a trip I want to keep in touch with my family.
Ernest says:
My wife got the $25 plan. She was told that the 300 min plan she had was the lowest. After telling them to cancel the service the Verison guy came up with the $25 plan. I love this internet!

I can tell you one better, I have a verizon wireless phone, and pay $15.00 a months for 25 anytime minutes. I have had it for years, they keep tring to tget me to change it – but get this, they even renew my phone every two years!!! ( I pay the same for the phone that anyone else with a plan does! For those of us who do not abuse the phone and don’t go over the allowable minutes, you can’t beat this.
Jay says:
Anyone been able to get these plans?
Dave says:
I was told of this secret $20 plan by Verizon by the FIOS/Phone people. I was told to sign up for the cellphone with the Wireless people and go back to them for the discount. Now no one heard of it and I lost my notes that had who I spoke to. I know they told me about it, but now everyone at Verizon denies it’s existence. It was called the “Customer Appreciation ?? or something plan”

Anyone?

I was checking the Alltell website and I didn’t see the basic Alltel plan that costs nothing if you don’t use it. Calls are 25 cents per minute but you only have to make one call per month to keep it active. Please let us know whether they still have this offering.
Jim says:
I am currently paying between $4 and $5 per month for a cell phone, however I average only 30 – 40 minutes a month. I use PagePlusCellular.com. They use the Verizon network and are PrePay with a flat rate of 12 cents per minute. Minutes are good for 4 month and carry over if you add more before the end of 4 months. So $10 gets me 83 minutes which lasts me over 2 months. Phones are nice. Mine cost $30 and came with $10 worth of minutes on it. Coverage is national. Quality is as good as I have had in the past with AT&T, Verizon and Suncom.
Gvise says:
PagePlusCellular is a great option for a low usage voice plan. I ditched my at&t phones and got PagePlus and love it. When I disconnected my at&t phones I told them they did not have a plan that suited my needs. No reason for me to roll over 5 or 6 hundred minutes a month just for them to drop off after a year.
Tom C says:
I purchased a cell phone and a basic Alltel plan that costs nothing if you don’t use it. Calls are 25 cents per minute but you only have to make one call per month to keep it active. I bought it for my wife as an emergency way to contact help. So I make one call each month and it costs 25 cents and I have access to help at any time.
Rich Menga says:
Well I definitely haven’t heard any cheaper than that, so you win the prize for “cheapest plan ever”. :-) If you have a link (and the name) to that plan it please post it.

If the price stays true it only costs 15 bucks for 60 minutes. Not bad a’tall.

Phil Meyer says:
Check out Virgin Mobile’s fee’s.
$20.00 every 3 months equals $6.67 per month!
Cheaper than T-Mobile’s cost!
Rich Menga says:
I assume this is pre-paid? If so, yeah that’s an awesome deal for sure. (If you have a link direct to that plan please post it.)
Shinhyoung Joo says:

I have a pre-pay plan similar to this with verizon. It saves my husband and I both around 600.00 per year next to what we were paying. It’s .15 per anytime minutes. You put 20.00 on the first time and after that you only have to put a minimum of 5.00 or however much you want once every 2 months before the deadline date. The minutes you already have roll over each time. It’s great if your not a constant cell-phone user and then it last much longer than you would think. Just do the math.
cro says:
Has anyone ever heard of spot mobile. With them I have unlimited talk, text and 250 data each month for only $29.99. That includes everything. They also have many lower price plans that you may like. Check them out.
